- Welcome back to truly Force free animal training .
- A common question I get is, how do you introduce dogs? Whether you're getting a dog from a shelter or you're trying to introduce, your friends dogs to your dog introducing your dogs can be something that .
- you have to be a little careful about especially if you don't know the history of the dogs .
- If there are some dogs who love every dog and you don't have to worry about it .
- And there are some dogs who don't like any dogs and so you wouldn't be introducing them anyway .
- But the confusing part comes when you're not really sure how the two dogs are going to interact .
- I'm going to demonstrate here a couple ways that I am introducing a new dog to one of my dogs that I'll use Captain, who knows a lot of dogs and is pretty comfortable, and he reads .
- other dogs pretty well .
- So I like to use him because if he's avoiding the other dog at means the other dog is probably giving off some anxiety signals .
- And I want you to just be able to see it's really important to watch body language during this .
- So as you're watching my this introduction, watch the body language because if one of them seems to be a little bit anxious, that's really important .
- And I don't want to make them meet if one of them is a little bit nervous .
- So how I like to introduce dogs, is to first have them both on leash, and just having them kind of be in my backyard or in a neutral area .
- If that's more appropriate where they get a chance to see each other but they don't have to engage .
- I don't allow them to do any hard stares and .
- I try to keep them .
- They look at the other dog and then I try to give them a treat or do something that makes it so that they get a little bit used to each other without having to be face-to-face .
- right away. In some situations .
- Though they don't look like they are getting very comfortable .
- So I may have to do this introductory a few times before they get a chance to play, then if they are .
- Are getting along, okay? And they seem to be doing better as we get closer .
- I may a let them play .
- Come On, Lukey .
- Come here Lukey, Good Boy! Good boy. .
- Maybe you can go in and get another sniff. You want another sniff? .
- Luke, Luke. Good boy. .
- Another technique that I do sometimes is I will take a dog for a walk with another dog and we parallel walk around the neighborhood or park and that sometimes gives them an opportunity to get used .
- to each other .
- But they are also distracted by the environment outside .
- So sometimes that's another way that I might introduce two dogs. I hope this helps as you go forward and if you need to introduce your dog to another dog. .
