Canadian Stock Market Timing - 04252023
How was the video ?
Description
-
00:00:00Good Morning, everyone, and welcome to Tuesday morning.
-
00:00:03My name, of course, is Stephen Whiteside
-
00:00:05from theuptrend.com with today's look at Canadian Stock Market Trends.
-
00:00:10In the premarket this morning, stock index futures and commodities are trading lower,
-
00:00:14so we are looking for some selling at the open on Tuesday morning.
-
00:00:18Let's start off with a quick look at the US market.
-
00:00:21The VIX traded up into the channel
-
00:00:22yesterday before coming down, closing near the low of the day.
-
00:00:26We're looking for a close on Tuesday above
-
00:00:29$18.41 to give us a new buy signal for the VIX.
-
00:00:32And of course, if fear starts to rise, we expect stocks to fall.
-
00:00:36We saw the DAO trade into the channel yesterday.
-
00:00:38We saw the S&P 500 trade into the channel.
-
00:00:42The Nasdaq closing in the channel, dipping
-
00:00:45below the lower channel line for the second trading day in a row.
-
00:00:49So for the Nasdaq 100 ETF, we're looking
-
00:00:52for a close below 314.88 on Tuesday to give us a sell signal.
-
00:00:56And that would sync up with the
-
00:00:59semiconductors already on a sell signal, making a new low for this move on Monday.
-
00:01:04Now, we're continuing to follow Tesla closely and it broke down below 160
-
00:01:09yesterday but recovered going into the close, still trading lower on the day.
-
00:01:15So 160 is no longer a potential area of support.
-
00:01:18Our next mathematical target is 150, but
-
00:01:21we also talked about looking back to the left, seeing that nice big open gap in
-
00:01:26which the top and the bottom may act as price magnets going forward.
-
00:01:31Now, the best performing stock on the S&P
-
00:01:34500 yesterday was a regional bank, which I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole.
-
00:01:38It closed up at over 12 % yesterday.
-
00:01:41It is down over 20 % in the premarket this morning.
-
00:01:44So what the market giveth, they taketh away.
-
00:01:48Now, moving on to the main topic this
-
00:01:50morning, and that, of course, is the Canadian stock market.
-
00:01:53I always get comments about why I don't
-
00:01:55talk about what's going on in the premarket in the Canadian stock market.
-
00:01:59Well, it's not actively traded.
-
00:02:02And if you listen to the local news station, the 24 hours News station, when
-
00:02:07they do their business report, they absolutely never mention what's going on
-
00:02:10in the pre market in the Canadian stock market.
-
00:02:13Now, there are a couple of ways to get an indication.
-
00:02:16Of course, an indication does not guarantee exactly what's going to happen.
-
00:02:20But if we look at the TSX 60, there are
-
00:02:23futures contracts for the TSX and the TSX 60.
-
00:02:26The TSX 60 is much more actively traded.
-
00:02:30This number is a little old since I took
-
00:02:32this picture, but this morning at 6:33 AM, the TSX 60 futures contract was trading
-
00:02:39down $4.40. Now, yesterday it was down $1.95.
-
00:02:44Down 4.40 gives us an indication that we're going to open lower.
-
00:02:48Another way to get a reliable number is to
-
00:02:51go to New York and look at the iShares Canada ETF.
-
00:02:56Yesterday, this particular ETF closed up a penny.
-
00:02:58This morning it is down $0.21. So that's
-
00:03:01giving us an indication that something is going on.
-
00:03:05You can see that we need to close below $35.02. Right now, we are trading at
-
00:03:11$35.02. When I took this snapshot, of course, this is an old number.
-
00:03:16It's an old number for me.
-
00:03:17It's going to be an older number for you by the time you see this video.
-
00:03:20So we are trading lower this morning, both in the futures contract and in the ETF.
-
00:03:26So that gives us a good indication that
-
00:03:28we're going to expect to see some selling at the open this morning.
-
00:03:32Now, moving from the TSX 60 to the TSX
-
00:03:35itself, which is a broader index with over 200 stocks compared to the 60.
-
00:03:40You can see it was a very small bar yesterday.
-
00:03:42So we did make a new high for this move
-
00:03:44before pulling back and closing slightly lower on the day.
-
00:03:48We are up at our price target up here.
-
00:03:50We're just treading along.
-
00:03:52Of course, we've got the highs from back
-
00:03:55in January and February that could be potential targets to the upside.
-
00:03:59And you can see that that is basically a wall of resistance.
-
00:04:04So we're having trouble moving higher up here.
-
00:04:06That doesn't guarantee that we're going to pull back.
-
00:04:09It's just right now we are stuck trying to break through resistance.
-
00:04:13That's also true for the TSX 60.
-
00:04:16You can see that the midcap stocks have started to pull back from that resistance.
-
00:04:21And then the small caps and microcaps
-
00:04:24have already left the building and have been selling off.
-
00:04:27So the riskier end of the market is
-
00:04:30tightening up and we are in a downtrend for both small caps and microcap stocks.
-
00:04:36Now looking at the cannabis sector, we actually made a new low for this move.
-
00:04:40I know that's not news, but it's
-
00:04:42interesting that when you look at the health care index, you've got a nice big
-
00:04:46pop a couple of days ago and that's still holding up.
-
00:04:49And that's from one stock and that's Bellus Health, which I guess is being
-
00:04:53taken over and nobody was suspecting that was going to happen.
-
00:04:58So congratulations for those parties keeping everything very secret.
-
00:05:04Now, moving on to the Canadian financials.
-
00:05:07They've had a nice recovery over the last month.
-
00:05:09Of course, they were pulled down by the US regional bank crisis.
-
00:05:14We've moved up. We're trying to get to 367.19, but there's
-
00:05:18an open gap that's holding us in check at the moment.
-
00:05:21We are seeing a little weakness in Canadian banks.
-
00:05:24They're starting to trade back into the channel.
-
00:05:27We do have a couple back on sell signals as of Monday's close.
-
00:05:31So the Bank of Nova Scotia and CIBC are both back on sell signals.
-
00:05:35And of course, if you wanted to short
-
00:05:37these stocks, this is the time and place to do so.
-
00:05:40Of course, the world is focused on shorting TD Bank, which is still on a buy
-
00:05:45signal, still trading above the upper channel line.
-
00:05:48National Bank made a new high yesterday.
-
00:05:50Royal Bank made a new high on Monday.
-
00:05:53So they're not all going in the same direction.
-
00:05:56Now, it's been the insurance companies
-
00:05:58really holding the financials up in made a new high yesterday.
-
00:06:01New high for manual life on Monday.
-
00:06:04And then looking at Sun Life, Sun Life has
-
00:06:06been stuck at resistance here for the last three days.
-
00:06:10Our price target is 65.63. We got as high as 65.58 yesterday.
-
00:06:16When we talk about price targets, either
-
00:06:18to the upside or to the downside, we're also talking about buyers and sellers.
-
00:06:22We're expecting to see some selling up here at the 65.63 level.
-
00:06:27That has certainly turned out to be the case over the last three years.
-
00:06:30Of course, if sellers outweigh buyers, then of course you get a lower close.
-
00:06:36If they don't, we closed higher yesterday.
-
00:06:38If we can break through 65.
-
00:06:4063, then 67.
-
00:06:4219 would be our next target to the upside.
-
00:06:46Now, gold has been on a sell signal for just a couple of days now.
-
00:06:50We have not been able to hold at 2,000.
-
00:06:52We closed at 1999.80 yesterday.
-
00:06:55We're trading below 2,000 this morning.
-
00:06:58I assumed that traders would try to hold
-
00:07:02the magical $2,000 level, but so far they have not been able to do so.
-
00:07:07Looking at the Panic Zone chart for the price of gold, you want to be
-
00:07:11a buyer off the bottom of the Panic Zones when a pressure zone forms.
-
00:07:15And of course, up here it gets a lot
-
00:07:17harder to make money even if we get a new buy signal.
-
00:07:21It's a lot harder to make money, a lot
-
00:07:23more risk up here than there was down here.
-
00:07:26Down here, we're getting rid of a lot of
-
00:07:29the sellers, a lot of people that want to be out of the gold market.
-
00:07:32They have left the building and now buyers outweigh sellers and we start to move up.
-
00:07:38Here it gets a bit more questionable.
-
00:07:40You get a lot more people wanting to take
-
00:07:42profits and that can start a new downtrend for any symbol that you're following.
-
00:07:48Now, gold stocks, they have been trending water up here.
-
00:07:51We've been on a sell signal for four days now.
-
00:07:54Kinross was the best performing gold stock on the TSX yesterday up a little over 1 %.
-
00:08:00Still on a sell signal here from Friday.
-
00:08:02We are looking for a close on Tuesday
-
00:08:05above 6.93. And then Barrick is still on a buy signal that would change on Tuesday
-
00:08:11with a close below $25.76. Next up, we're looking at energy stocks
-
00:08:18which have been on a sell signal for a couple of days now.
-
00:08:21They traded higher yesterday.
-
00:08:22A close above 241.61 would give us a new buy signal.
-
00:08:26We still have Canadian Natural Resources
-
00:08:28on a buy signal that would change on Tuesday with a close below $80.17,
-
00:08:33which would join Suncor already on its sell signal for a week now.
-
00:08:37We're not expecting Suncor to change direction on Tuesday.
-
00:08:42Looking at industrials making a new high yesterday that had a lot to do with the
-
00:08:47railroads, Canadian National, Canadian Pacific all doing very well at the moment.
-
00:08:52Compare that to Ballard Power and New
-
00:08:55Flyer, which are the big losers in the industrial section at the moment.
-
00:08:59Then let's finish off with telecom stocks.
-
00:09:01They've been treading water up here for a couple of weeks now.
-
00:09:04We did see Bell and Telus both make new highs on Monday.
-
00:09:08At the same time, we've got Rogers back on a sell signal.
-
00:09:11Rogers has been extremely volatile over the last month.
-
00:09:16Okay, folks, that is all for this morning's presentation.
-
00:09:19We're still looking for a lower open on Tuesday morning.
-
00:09:22Obviously, nobody's panicking on Tuesday morning.
-
00:09:25It's just unwinding of things that happen
-
00:09:28on Monday, so no major downward pressure on Tuesday morning in the premarket.
-
00:09:34Have a great day on Tuesday.
-
00:09:36Next time you'll hear my voice is on Wednesday morning. In order
