This is what the new screen of Adacity looks like
    • 00:00:08
This is an updated version of what you might have
    • 00:00:12
And you'll notice that you no longer have a drop-down menu below the Play and Record buttons that show you where your microphone is or some of the other audio settings, the volume and microphone levels
    • 00:00:34
And so I'm going to show you where those are exactly
    • 00:00:38
First of all, you need to set up the preferences
    • 00:00:43
So you would go to Edit, Preferences
    • 00:00:49
This is still the same way that you do this as it would be in the older versions
    • 00:00:59
And you can hit Devices here and make sure in the Channels it says Mono
    • 00:01:07
      Default is Stereo
    • 00:01:08
You want it to be Mono
    • 00:01:11
You don't necessarily have to change your recording device
    • 00:01:14
But this time you can do it later and that might change depending on what type of microphone you're using
    • 00:01:21
So I wouldn't necessarily change this right now
    • 00:01:29
And then when you go down to Quality, you want to click on or select 32,000 Hertz
    • 00:01:41
      The default is 44,100 Hertz
    • 00:01:46
      You don't want that
    • 00:01:47
You want it at 32,000 Hertz because it will not import into Abacus if you don't have it set at 32,000 Hertz
    • 00:01:58
If you're working on the portal, then that will accept the 44,100 Hertz
    • 00:02:06
      But this program will not
    • 00:02:08
So just set it up properly to get the proper settings to begin with
    • 00:02:13
You want it to 16-bit best for the sample rate converter
    • 00:02:21
      Dither you want none
    • 00:02:24
And again down below here in both real-time conversion and high-quality conversion, you want the settings to best quality and none
    • 00:02:36
      So best none, best none
    • 00:02:38
      Just OK
    • 00:02:41
And you've got your settings all set
    • 00:02:44
Again, we don't see where those microphones are
    • 00:02:49
So you go over here to the middle of your screen, just to the left of the middle, and you'll see an audio button
    • 00:02:56
So you drop down where that little carrot is and you'll have these settings
    • 00:03:04
Now the host you would normally see down below in the older versions, playback device, that's there and the recording device, which is what you need to see to make sure that you're using the proper microphone
    • 00:03:21
      I'm using a Yeti here
    • 00:03:23
Sometimes I use a Samsung Go mic most of the time, and that's what you'll be clicking and selecting here if you need it
    • 00:03:32
Now if for some reason the microphone is not showing, then it is because you have not started the program with the microphone plugged in
    • 00:03:46
So you need to exit out of the program, plug in your microphone if you haven't already, and then open it back up again, and then it will already be there
    • 00:03:59
It will be in the selection
    • 00:04:03
So again, if it's not there, it's because you've opened the program without the microphone being plugged in
    • 00:04:10
So stop the program by clicking the X up in here in the upper right hand corner, and then restart the program, and then it'll be here to select
    • 00:04:21
The sample rate down in the bottom left hand corner should now be at the correct setting
    • 00:04:29
If you go out and come back in, that will be at 32,000
    • 00:04:34
      It will stay there
    • 00:04:37
Get yourself in the habit though of always checking down there just to make sure that nothing has changed
    • 00:04:45
And then you can start recording your voice
    • 00:04:48
And what you don't want is something that is too loud, which shows a lot of red
    • 00:04:55
      So watch for that
    • 00:04:59
And then you can come in here, and you can get rid of all of those silent places
    • 00:05:06
You can just click the delete button
    • 00:05:11
      You don't have to work
    • 00:05:12
      Look for the scissors
    • 00:05:15
So just highlight that and hit delete, and it will be fine
    • 00:05:23
So this should give you an idea of how you do the new audacity
    • 00:05:29
If you want to know what version you're in, hit help, about audacity, and it will show you the version here
    • 00:05:39
      This one is version 3.2.4
    • 00:05:45
      They all work the same
    • 00:05:47
It's just that it might be that you don't see the controls where you did before
