-
00:00:00Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Wednesday morning.
-
00:00:03It's Stephen Whiteside here from theuptrend.
-
00:00:05com.
-
00:00:06In the premarket this morning, stock index futures are very quiet.
-
00:00:09They're slightly above fair value.
-
00:00:11Commodities are also quiet on Wednesday morning.
-
00:00:14We've got some inflation numbers coming
-
00:00:16out tomorrow, the market might be on pause until those numbers come out.
-
00:00:20Now, yesterday was an interesting day.
-
00:00:21We put in a lower-low, and we did end up with a lot of bullish reversal signals.
-
00:00:27It was a strange day.
-
00:00:28We were down in the premarket.
-
00:00:30We traded much lower during the day and then came back, still closing down at
-
00:00:35pretty well the same levels we were in the pre-market.
-
00:00:38Now we did generate a lot of bullish reversal signals.
-
00:00:41They're very weak bullish reversal signals because at the end of the day, most of the
-
00:00:45symbols that receive bullish reversal signals also closed lower on the day.
-
00:00:50Those are not the most impactful signals that you can get.
-
00:00:54If we had have closed higher on the day, then I would be beating the drums that we
-
00:00:59put in a bottom yesterday, but that is not the case at the present time.
-
00:01:04Now the opposite is also true.
-
00:01:05The VIX put in a bearish reversal day, but at the end of the day, still closed higher
-
00:01:10on the day did not break down and closed below the previous days low.
-
00:01:14So as a bearish reversal signal, again, it's weak.
-
00:01:17We're looking for more movement to the downside to tell us that yesterday was a
-
00:01:21top for the VIX, and we don't have that at the present time.
-
00:01:25Now, on Wednesday, we're looking for a
-
00:01:27close on the VIX below $14.44 to give us a new daily sell signal, and
-
00:01:32that would be supportive for higher stock prices.
-
00:01:35The Dow traded back into the channel yesterday.
-
00:01:38The S&P 500 traded up to the lower channel line.
-
00:01:41The Nasdaq didn't get that high, made in a new low yesterday.
-
00:01:45You'll see a lot of new lows for this move made on Tuesday.
-
00:01:50Then you can see for the iShares for the Russell 2000, definitely a lower low
-
00:01:54yesterday and closing below the lower channel line.
-
00:01:58Similar situation for the micro caps.
-
00:02:01Looking at the Canadian market, the iShares for the TSX60 put in a low
-
00:02:06yesterday, but higher than the low from Friday.
-
00:02:10That could mark a bottom.
-
00:02:11We'll just have to wait and see.
-
00:02:13Then banks were in the news yesterday.
-
00:02:16We got news out that very negative news on the US banking sector.
-
00:02:20At the end of the day, though, we did not
-
00:02:22see the banks or the regional banks actually generate a sell signal.
-
00:02:25In both cases, we traded through the lower channel line, but did not close below it.
-
00:02:29We're still on a buy signal here, even with that bad news.
-
00:02:34Now, Canadian financial is still on a sell signal here.
-
00:02:37Canadian bank is making a new low on Tuesday.
-
00:02:40The story hasn't changed.
-
00:02:42Bank of Nova Scotia is still the weakest, TD Bank still the strongest.
-
00:02:46The TD bank, we need to close below 85.40. We closed at 85.42, so just three cents
-
00:02:52away from generating a new sell signal on Wednesday.
-
00:02:57Looking at those big cap technology
-
00:02:58stocks, Apple had a very quiet inside day on Tuesday, so no change in trend there.
-
00:03:04No change in trend for Amazon still coming
-
00:03:06off that gap higher from a couple of days ago.
-
00:03:10Meta may generate a sell signal on Wednesday.
-
00:03:13We're looking for a close below $308.65.
-
00:03:17No change for Microsoft making a new low on Tuesday.
-
00:03:21No change for Alphabet, inside day on Tuesday.
-
00:03:24And no change for NVIDIA, very quiet trading on Tuesday.
-
00:03:29While Shopify headed down, where did it head to?
-
00:03:32Right down to our next price target of $75.
-
00:03:35And that was support back in May.
-
00:03:38And so we're going to be looking closely to see if that holds on Wednesday or if we
-
00:03:43break down and head towards that nice big open gap.
-
00:03:47Then looking at the Tesla inside day on Tuesday.
-
00:03:50A day of indecision for Tesla, still a lot of sell signal, no change there.
-
00:03:55Then looking at commodities, we saw copper drop sharply yesterday.
-
00:03:58It didn't really affect the mining stocks too much.
-
00:04:01Metals and mining ETF made a new low for this move before
-
00:04:05recovering and closing down just two cents on the day.
-
00:04:08Similar situation in Toronto with the
-
00:04:10Global Mining Index making a new low before recovering.
-
00:04:14And yeah, it was down 49 cents, but less than half a % on the day.
-
00:04:20Now, compare that to the GLD and the SLV,
-
00:04:23so gold and silver, both making new lows yesterday.
-
00:04:27And then if we look at the stocks, the XGD was down yesterday, didn't make a new low,
-
00:04:32unlike the GDX, which made a new low yesterday.
-
00:04:36And the SIL for silver miners also made a new low on Tuesday.
-
00:04:42Then looking at Barrick, the biggest Canadian mining stock did make a new low
-
00:04:47yesterday, but only closed down two cents on the day.
-
00:04:50And not as much love for new month making
-
00:04:53a new low, actually, gapping lower on Tuesday.
-
00:04:57Then looking at the energy sector, we saw
-
00:04:59the USO move up nicely, making a new closing high for this move on Tuesday.
-
00:05:04Gasoline was up, natural gas was up.
-
00:05:07Natural gas starting to break out above 7.42. Our next target is 7.81. That's
-
00:05:13going to be significant, first of all, if we can get up there.
-
00:05:15But secondly, are we going to break through it?
-
00:05:18Then, of course, if we want to be bullish
-
00:05:20on natural gas, we want to break through the high from back in June.
-
00:05:24Then looking at the stocks, US energy stocks had a wild day.
-
00:05:28They actually traded below the lower
-
00:05:30channel line before we're covering closing up just under half a %.
-
00:05:34On the TSX, we actually closed up one % on the day.
-
00:05:38The most actively traded energy stock on
-
00:05:40the TSX was Suncor and made a new closing high yesterday.
-
00:05:44In the US, the most actively traded energy stock was Southwestern Energy, and it
-
00:05:50closed basically unchanged just down a penny on the day.
-
00:05:55Still on a buy signal here, still closing above the upper channel line.
-
00:05:59Okay folks, that is all for Wednesday morning.
-
00:06:02It's fairly quiet out there still.
-
00:06:04DOW future is up 48 points.
-
00:06:07We may see some volatility in the energy
-
00:06:09sector as energy inventory has come out at 10:30 this morning.
-
00:06:13Enjoy the rest of your day and next time
-
00:06:15you'll hear my voice is on Thursday morning.
