-
00:00:00Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Tuesday morning.
-
00:00:03It's Stephen Whiteside here from theuptrend.
-
00:00:05com. In the pre-market this morning, stock
-
00:00:08index futures and commodities are currently trading below fair value.
-
00:00:12So so far, it looks like the market wants
-
00:00:14to do a little selling at the open on Tuesday morning.
-
00:00:17Now, yesterday, the VIX ended the day in the channel, so that's neutral.
-
00:00:21So options traders are not overly bullish
-
00:00:23or overly bearish going into Tuesday's trading action.
-
00:00:27That might have a lot to do with the Fed meeting, which is starting today.
-
00:00:30And of course, we expect volatility to
-
00:00:33expand dramatically after 2:00 PM, Wednesday afternoon.
-
00:00:37Now, we'll start off today's presentation
-
00:00:39with a quick look at the US market, and then we'll move on to the Canadian market.
-
00:00:43The Dow is currently on a sell signal as of Friday's close,
-
00:00:47and we've got Boeing making a new low yesterday, so that story has not changed.
-
00:00:52The S&P 500 still on a buy signal.
-
00:00:55That would change on Tuesday with a close below $509.
-
00:00:5987.
-
00:01:00The Nasdaq ended Friday on a sell signal, so that didn't change yesterday.
-
00:01:04We traded up into the channel.
-
00:01:06We're currently trading lower in the pre-market this morning.
-
00:01:09The Russell 2000 and the iShares Microcap
-
00:01:13ETF still on sell signals, no change there.
-
00:01:17Now, yesterday, there was a couple of big stories that captivated the market.
-
00:01:23The first one was Google and Apple
-
00:01:25partnering, and it looks like it was better for Google than Apple.
-
00:01:28But there's a Google or Alphabet gapping higher yesterday.
-
00:01:32Apple also gapped higher yesterday, and
-
00:01:35just like Alphabet, it gave up most of its gains going into the close.
-
00:01:39While we traded above the upper channel line yesterday, we did not close above it,
-
00:01:43and we're looking for a close on Tuesday above $174.
-
00:01:4678 to give us a new buy signal for Apple.
-
00:01:51Nvidia traded higher, closed higher yesterday.
-
00:01:54On Tuesday, we're looking for a close below $853.
-
00:01:5973.
-
00:02:00And then looking at Tesla, everybody was excited.
-
00:02:03Tesla was up over 6% yesterday,
-
00:02:05and we're still looking for a close on Tuesday above $180.
-
00:02:0840 to give us a buy signal for Tesla.
-
00:02:13Now moving on to the Canadian market.
-
00:02:15Fairly quiet trading yesterday for the TSX and the TSX-60.
-
00:02:19That's an inside day.
-
00:02:21We did see mid-caps make a new high for this move on Monday.
-
00:02:24Inside day for small caps.
-
00:02:26And unfortunately, the Venture Exchange
-
00:02:28made a new low for this move in the market.
-
00:02:32Now, what worked yesterday, well, health care was the big winner.
-
00:02:35And when you see it up over 3%, you know that's a marijuana stock.
-
00:02:38Then we've got energy, real estate, and industrials.
-
00:02:42What didn't work yesterday, consumer
-
00:02:43staples down less than 1%, so nothing significant there.
-
00:02:47The marijuana stocks were actually the best performing sector in North America on
-
00:02:52Monday, based on the sectors that we follow.
-
00:02:55There's the Horizons Marijuana Life ETF making a new high on Monday.
-
00:03:00And it was a Tilray was the big catalyst
-
00:03:02up over 10%, new buy signal on Friday, follow through to the upside on Monday.
-
00:03:08And then looking at energy stocks, looking
-
00:03:11at the iShares ETF, we made a new high for this move on Monday.
-
00:03:15Now, this morning, I wanted to take a look at industrials.
-
00:03:17We don't talk about this sector a lot.
-
00:03:19Most of the people trading the market are
-
00:03:23trading the resource-based stocks more than industrials.
-
00:03:26But industrials are a huge component of the Canadian market, and the big elephants
-
00:03:31in the room, of course, are the railroad stocks.
-
00:03:34There's their market caps as of yesterday, and then we've got Thompson Reuters, and
-
00:03:38then Waste Connections are the big players in the Canadian industrial sector.
-
00:03:43CP, still on a buy signal, very quiet trading on Monday.
-
00:03:47CN, back on a buy signal as of Monday's
-
00:03:50close, looking to see if we can take out the recent high.
-
00:03:53Then we've got Thompson Reuters, still on a sell signal here, no change.
-
00:03:57And then Waste Connections, one of the best performers in the industrials in
-
00:04:012024, up over 17% year to date, making a new high on Monday.
-
00:04:07And then the old SNC, I still call it SNC, is up over 31%.
-
00:04:13That's the best performer in the Canadian industrial sector.
-
00:04:17And then we've got WSP Global up over 20 % year to date, still on a buy signal.
-
00:04:23That would change on Tuesday if we were to close below $220.
-
00:04:2758.
-
00:04:28Now, what's not working in the industrials
-
00:04:30in 2024 is Ballard Power down over 24 % year to date.
-
00:04:35Very shaky trading so far this year.
-
00:04:39When you look at the Panic Zone chart, you
-
00:04:41see the elongated pressure zones across the bottom of the screen.
-
00:04:44That's telling you that the stock is
-
00:04:46broken and something you should probably avoid.
-
00:04:49When you look at the Daily Fly Paper channel chart, you can see that it's acted
-
00:04:52as resistance as the market has separated between the Bulls and the bears, and the
-
00:04:58bears are in control, the don't want to play.
-
00:05:01If we start moving up from here, we have
-
00:05:03to assume that it's going to stop at the Fly Paper channel once again.
-
00:05:07The first sign something new is happening is a breakout above the FlyPaper channel.
-
00:05:12You can see back here, yes, we traded
-
00:05:15above the Fly Paper channel back here last summer, but we did not break away from it.
-
00:05:21We poked above it, but did not break away.
-
00:05:23So we would need to see a break away to tell us that something new is happening.
-
00:05:28And so far, coming in to Tuesday's trading action.
-
00:05:31We're down at the bottom here, and no sign
-
00:05:34that things are going to turn around anytime soon.
-
00:05:38Now, let's finish off looking at Canadian banks.
-
00:05:40We've got a couple of winners and a couple of losers right now.
-
00:05:43And on the winners column, we've got Bank
-
00:05:44of Nova Scotia, CIBC, and the National Bank.
-
00:05:48What's not working, the TD Bank, which has
-
00:05:51not performed well, put in a lower high, and now it's rolled over back on a daily
-
00:05:56sell signal as of Monday's close, joining Canadian Western Bank and Laurentian,
-
00:06:02which is back on a sell signal as well as of Monday's close.
-
00:06:06So some people getting out of some of the Canadian bank stocks on Monday.
-
00:06:11Okay, folks, that is all for this morning's presentation.
-
00:06:15Monday might turn out to be a buy the rumors, sell the news type situation.
-
00:06:21As we come into Tuesday's trading action,
-
00:06:24we do have all the stocks, all the major US tech stocks we looked at earlier are
-
00:06:29all trading We're getting lower this morning.
-
00:06:31So that might have been the top for this particular move, but only time will tell.
-
00:06:36And then, of course, we've got the Fed meeting, which could certainly change the
-
00:06:39overall direction of the market after 2:00 PM on Wednesday.
-
00:06:43So we'll just have to wait and see what happens next.
-
00:06:46But we do have the Nasdaq already on a short term sell signal, and so traders are
-
00:06:51on edge, looking to lock in some profits up at these levels.
-
00:06:55Enjoy the rest of your day, folks.
-
00:06:57Next time you'll hear my voice is on Wednesday morning.
