-
00:00:00Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Thursday morning.
-
00:00:03It's Stephen Whiteside here from TheUpTrend.
-
00:00:05com In the pre-market this morning, stock index futures are above fair value.
-
00:00:09Commodities are mixed with crude oil,
-
00:00:11lower, while gold is higher by $3 in the pre-market.
-
00:00:14Now, we do have a lot of economic numbers
-
00:00:17coming out at 8:30 this morning, including retail sales and jobless claims, and that
-
00:00:21could certainly add to the pre-market volatility.
-
00:00:25Starting off, looking at the VIX, which spiked sharply sharply higher on on
-
00:00:30Tuesday, and we pulled back on Wednesday, had an inside day.
-
00:00:34So on Thursday, we're looking for the VIX to close below 13.
-
00:00:3721 to put us back on a bullish footing.
-
00:00:40We still have the S&P 500, Nasdaq 100 on buy signals.
-
00:00:44They recovered nicely on Wednesday, but
-
00:00:47still pretty close to generating a daily sell signal, so we should be on guard.
-
00:00:53Looking at the Canadian market, the market
-
00:00:55recovered quite nicely on Wednesday, not enough to give us new buy signals for the
-
00:00:59The TSX, the TSX 60, mid-caps, small-caps, or micro-caps.
-
00:01:05Now, looking at the sector performance
-
00:01:07from Wednesday's trading action, all sectors were positive for the day, being
-
00:01:12led higher by Infotec, and We're still on a sell signal here.
-
00:01:16We came down hard on Tuesday, and we did trade back into the channel on Wednesday.
-
00:01:21The biggest winners in the sector on Wednesday were Bitfarm and Hut8.
-
00:01:26Those were the two best-performing Infotec stocks.
-
00:01:30Then looking at the industrials, dipped into the channel on Tuesday.
-
00:01:34Big recovery on Wednesday,
-
00:01:36being led higher by the railroads, still both on buy signals.
-
00:01:40Then looking at consumer staples, huge update there.
-
00:01:43It was Circle K led the pack, followed by
-
00:01:46Loblaw's, which is back on a buy signal as of Wednesday's close.
-
00:01:51Looking at the world of commodities,
-
00:01:53starting in the energy sector, we saw crude oil pull back yesterday.
-
00:01:56It's pulling back again in the pre-market.
-
00:01:59Not enough to It's going to give us a sell signal today.
-
00:02:01And then we've got natural gas making a new low on Wednesday.
-
00:02:05So both of those commodities did not help
-
00:02:08the energy sector, and we did have an inside day closed unchanged on the day.
-
00:02:13So for the energy ETF, we're looking for a close on Thursday below $15.
-
00:02:1914.
-
00:02:20Then looking at the miners, starting with the price of gold.
-
00:02:23Gold is trying to hold 2000 here.
-
00:02:27If we break that, then 1937.
-
00:02:2950 would be our next target to the downside.
-
00:02:31And silver is trying to hold $22 and traded and closed higher yesterday.
-
00:02:37Still on a sell signal, no change there.
-
00:02:39No change for gold stocks, which made a
-
00:02:42new low yesterday, and the ETF closed down just a penny on the day.
-
00:02:46So a little bit of a recovery there.
-
00:02:48The first time something new is happening, of course, if we close above the previous
-
00:02:52day's high, and we certainly didn't do that yesterday.
-
00:02:56Okay, folks, that's all for this morning's presentation.
-
00:02:59I'm doing this ahead of the big economic numbers coming out at 8:30 this morning,
-
00:03:04and they could certainly change the direction of the market.
-
00:03:07But so far, it looks like the market wants
-
00:03:08to have a positive open on Thursday morning.
-
00:03:12Enjoy the rest of your day.
-
00:03:13Next time you'll hear my voice is on Friday morning.
