-
00:00:00Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Friday morning.
-
00:00:02It's Stephen Whiteside here from theuptrend.
-
00:00:04com. In the pre-market this morning, stock
-
00:00:07index futures are slightly below fair value.
-
00:00:10Commodities are mixed with crude oil
-
00:00:11lower, while gold is up $10 in the pre-market.
-
00:00:15Now, that being said, we do have payroll numbers coming out at 8:30 this morning,
-
00:00:19and they could certainly change the direction of the market.
-
00:00:23Now, the VIX is still on a buy signal.
-
00:00:25Options traders are obviously concerned.
-
00:00:27There are a lot of stocks not doing well at the same time.
-
00:00:31There are a lot of stocks that are very overpriced at the moment.
-
00:00:34So options traders a little concerned.
-
00:00:37Looking at the week so far, we've got the Dow down three quarters of a %.
-
00:00:42We've got the S&P 500 up a little over a third of a %.
-
00:00:46The Nasdaq is basically unchanged for the week.
-
00:00:49The TSX, on the other hand, is up on the
-
00:00:52week, and that has a lot to do with the crude oil or energy and gold stocks.
-
00:00:57Looking at the TSX Global Gold Index, it is up over seven % so far this week.
-
00:01:04So if we close at this level, that'll give us a new weekly buy signal.
-
00:01:09Now, at the same time, this is still a very bearish chart.
-
00:01:11We recently made a lower high and a lower low.
-
00:01:14So the first thing that has to happen here is a breakout above that downtrend line.
-
00:01:18And then the next target, of course, would be the high from late 2023.
-
00:01:25Then looking at semiconductors, they're up nearly 5% on the week.
-
00:01:30And that, of course, is what's really in the news at the moment.
-
00:01:33Now, the stock I get asked about the most
-
00:01:36is still Apple, and Apple is still on a sell signal.
-
00:01:38We're still short Apple.
-
00:01:39That hasn't changed.
-
00:01:41We're holding the 168. 75 level.
-
00:01:43We closed at 169 even yesterday.
-
00:01:47If we break down from here, our next target is 162.
-
00:01:5050. If you're long puts or if you're short
-
00:01:54Apple, hopefully you've locked in some profits here.
-
00:01:57You don't have to completely buy back your
-
00:02:00or sell all your puts, but you should lock in some profits.
-
00:02:04Of course, what we're going to be looking
-
00:02:05for first is a close above the previous day's high.
-
00:02:08That hasn't happened yet.
-
00:02:10Then the second thing that's going to have to happen before we start becoming bullish
-
00:02:14on the stock is we need to start trading above the open gap.
-
00:02:19And of course, we're not going to do that on Friday morning.
-
00:02:23The next most popular stock on our site at
-
00:02:25the moment is NVIDIA, and it's coming up to the 937.
-
00:02:2850 level.
-
00:02:29It's trading higher in the pre-market this morning, and I'm sure traders want to take
-
00:02:33it up to the $1,000 level, which, of course, is a big round number.
-
00:02:37The pros look like they're still content
-
00:02:40to be buyers here, and they have total control.
-
00:02:43Compared that to Apple, where they don't have any control at the moment and are not
-
00:02:48interested in taking control on Friday morning.
-
00:02:52Then we have Tesla.
-
00:02:53And Tesla, we were projecting higher prices here, but that open gap has held
-
00:02:59the market in check, and we've come back down to the previous lows.
-
00:03:03We're currently holding the 171. 88 level.
-
00:03:06We haven't broken that yet.
-
00:03:07If we do, then 156.
-
00:03:0825 would be our next target to the downside.
-
00:03:12Looking up on Friday, yesterday was an
-
00:03:15inside day, so we did not close above the previous day's high.
-
00:03:18Again, that would be the first thing that
-
00:03:20we would look for before we start thinking about buying Tesla.
-
00:03:24Now, moving into the Canadian market, the most popular stock is Shopify.
-
00:03:28Still short Shopify.
-
00:03:30We've got conflicting signals here.
-
00:03:32We are projecting lower prices, but we do have a pressure zone forming,
-
00:03:36so we would certainly take a buy signal if one were to show up.
-
00:03:40You can see we're holding the $100 level.
-
00:03:42We closed at $ 101.
-
00:03:4340 yesterday.
-
00:03:45I got down as low as $98. 80.
-
00:03:48And of course, these are numbers off the TSX.
-
00:03:51Now, if we start breaking down from here, 87.
-
00:03:5450 is our next mathematical target.
-
00:03:56But then, of course, we have the low from right at the start 2024 at $94.
-
00:04:0232.
-
00:04:04Looking up on Friday, and it is
-
00:04:06mathematically possible to get a buy signal on Friday with a close above $104.
-
00:04:1165. If that doesn't happen on Friday, of
-
00:04:14course, that upper channel line is going to continue to move lower daily.
-
00:04:17We did not close above the previous day's high yesterday.
-
00:04:20It came pretty close to it, but did not close above the previous day's high.
-
00:04:24Now, speaking of technology stocks, the
-
00:04:26best performing technology stock in Canada is Celesta a year today.
-
00:04:30It is up over 64%.
-
00:04:33You can see how investors bought the dips off the FlyPaper channel.
-
00:04:38And look at that huge spread.
-
00:04:40So it would be incredibly risky to buy it up at these levels here.
-
00:04:44Of course, over time, when we get a pullback, then you could consider buying
-
00:04:48it, but I would certainly not want to jump in to Celestica at this time.
-
00:04:53You can see, yesterday, we put in a higher high.
-
00:04:55We closed slightly lower on the day.
-
00:04:58We did not close above the previous It
-
00:05:00stays low, so not overly concerned just yet.
-
00:05:03Now, on a month to date basis, the best
-
00:05:05performing Canadian stock on the TSX is Seabridge Gold.
-
00:05:09It's up over 34%.
-
00:05:11You can see we're well off the right side channel No concern about a sell signal on
-
00:05:17Friday, but there is a concern about taking money off the table.
-
00:05:21Now, we came up to the previous high from December, broke through that, headed up.
-
00:05:25Our next target was 13. 67.
-
00:05:28If you haven't already locked in some
-
00:05:30profits, it would be a good thing to do so.
-
00:05:33You don't have to liquidate a position.
-
00:05:35Just take a chunk of your position and lock in those profits.
-
00:05:40Let's continue on and take a look at the miners.
-
00:05:44Copper was up nicely yesterday, making a new high for this move.
-
00:05:47Copper miners also making a new high for
-
00:05:49this move, pulling back off the high, running up to the December, pretty close
-
00:05:54to the December highs before pulling back, but still looking very strong there.
-
00:05:58Then looking at the GLD, we moved up to the $200 level.
-
00:06:02We're trading slightly above that in the pre-market on Friday morning.
-
00:06:05Then looking at gold stocks on the TSX or in New York, there's the Gold miners ETF,
-
00:06:12there's the junior gold miners all doing well at the moment.
-
00:06:15Then looking at the Silver ETF, the SLV, it made a new high for this move.
-
00:06:22We're coming up to the December highs right now.
-
00:06:24It'll be interesting to see if we can break through them.
-
00:06:27You can see that the December highs did not hit our mathematical target of $22.
-
00:06:3266.
-
00:06:33And then looking at the silver miners,
-
00:06:35the stocks themselves up a little over 2% on Thursday.
-
00:06:41Then let's finish off looking at the energy sector.
-
00:06:43We had crude oil pulled back.
-
00:06:45The USO was down slightly yesterday.
-
00:06:48Closed below 73.
-
00:06:4918 would give us a sell signal on Friday.
-
00:06:52That would join the gasoline already on a
-
00:06:55sell signal, and natural gas, which unfortunately rolled over on Thursday.
-
00:06:59It back on a sell signal as of Thursday's close.
-
00:07:03Looking at energy stocks on the TSX, you
-
00:07:06can see we closed at the previous day's low after making a new high on Wednesday,
-
00:07:11and US energy stocks made a new high on Thursday for this move.
-
00:07:16So things still looking pretty bullish for stocks in the commodity sectors.
-
00:07:21Okay, folks, that is all for this morning's presentation.
-
00:07:23I'm doing this ahead of those payroll numbers, which could certainly change the
-
00:07:27direction of the market after they come out at 8:30 this morning.
-
00:07:31Enjoy the rest of your day. Enjoy your weekend.
-
00:07:34Next time you'll hear my voice is on Monday morning.
