00:00:00Hello, everyone, and welcome to Thursday morning.
-
00:00:02It's Stephen Whiteside here from theuptrend.
-
00:00:05com.
-
00:00:06In the premarket this morning, stock index futures are higher.
-
00:00:08DOW futures up about 100 points.
-
00:00:11We do have commodities mixed with the
-
00:00:13energies higher while the metals are lower on Thursday morning.
-
00:00:18I want to start off today's presentation
-
00:00:20saying thank you to everyone who signed up for our Blood Donor Rewards program.
-
00:00:25If you haven't heard back from us, please
-
00:00:27send us a note today and we'll make sure you get set up.
-
00:00:32We have had some problems sending emails to Gmail accounts this week.
-
00:00:36So if you've got a Gmail account, that's
-
00:00:38one of the reasons you may not have heard from us.
-
00:00:41But yeah, if you haven't heard from us, please ping us today.
-
00:00:44Let us know and we'll take care of that right away.
-
00:00:46And again, thank you very much for
-
00:00:48everyone who signed up for our Blood Donor Rewards program so far.
-
00:00:54Now, we are coming up to month and quarter
-
00:00:56end and a couple of holidays, and that usually gives the market a bullish bias.
-
00:01:00If we were going to see some selling this
-
00:01:02week, we would have assumed it would have been very muted.
-
00:01:05And that's pretty well how things turned out as the market continues to move higher
-
00:01:10here and the VIX is still on a sell signal.
-
00:01:13So options traders are not spooked by anything at the moment
-
00:01:16and we're looking for things to change on Thursday if we see a close on the VIX
-
00:01:20above $14.40. We have seen some weakness in the DOW.
-
00:01:25It is on a sell signal right now.
-
00:01:27Yesterday was an inside day.
-
00:01:29We do have the S&P 500 trading right up to the upper channel line, the Nasdaq 100
-
00:01:36trading right up to the upper channel line, and the Nasdaq composite.
-
00:01:40The Russell has a little ways to go but could certainly generate a buy signal on
-
00:01:45Thursday if we continue to move higher throughout the day.
-
00:01:48The stocks index pulled back yesterday with an inside day, so no fall through to
-
00:01:53the upside after that big move up on Tuesday.
-
00:01:57Now, what worked yesterday in the US market was the energy sector followed by
-
00:02:01consumer communication services followed by consumer discretionary.
-
00:02:05Energy stocks traded right up to the upper channel line yesterday.
-
00:02:09The biggest winner in that sector on the
-
00:02:11S&P 500 was Williams Companies, making a new high for this move.
-
00:02:15Then looking at communication services, we're back on a buy signal here.
-
00:02:19The big winner yesterday was Dish Network trading up and generated a buy signal.
-
00:02:25It is certainly could be a bullish sign that we're holding support here.
-
00:02:29We didn't make a lower low, but last time we popped, we didn't get too far.
-
00:02:35Your world is not from here up to way up at the top left hand corner of the screen.
-
00:02:40Your world is much muted, but certainly
-
00:02:43you could make some money trading back up to the recent highs.
-
00:02:48Then looking at Consumer Discretionary.
-
00:02:50Now, this is odd.
-
00:02:51If the Fed is still trying to raise interest rates and slow the economy down,
-
00:02:55Consumer Discretionary shouldn't be winning.
-
00:02:58Consumer Staples should be winning, but that's not what's going on right now.
-
00:03:02Nobody's on recession watch anymore, apparently.
-
00:03:05The big winner in consumer discretionary
-
00:03:08yesterday was Carnival cruises, and all the cruise lines did very well.
-
00:03:13Norwegian, close follow up, and then Royal
-
00:03:16Caribbean, all the cruise lines are doing very well at the moment.
-
00:03:21Now, looking at big cap stocks, big cap technology stocks.
-
00:03:25We've got Apple making a new high yesterday.
-
00:03:27We saw a small pullback in Amazon.
-
00:03:30Then looking at Meta, very quiet day on Wednesday.
-
00:03:34We've got Microsoft trading in the channel.
-
00:03:36So a close above $338.84 would give us a buy signal on Thursday.
-
00:03:42Then looking at Netflix, we need to close above 430.92. We closed at 428.40.
-
00:03:50So we've just got a little ways to go to get a buy signal for Netflix.
-
00:03:54Then an inside day yesterday for NVIDIA, still on a sell signal.
-
00:03:59Then Shopify trading right up to the upper...
-
00:04:01Or closing right up at the upper channel line yesterday.
-
00:04:04Looking at Shopify on the TSX, 87.50 still acting as resistance.
-
00:04:08If we can start breaking out above 87.50,
-
00:04:11then 93.75 and $100 comes into play on Shopify trading on the TSX.
-
00:04:18Then looking at Tesla, Tesla trading up to the upper channel line yesterday.
-
00:04:22We are trading higher in the pre market
-
00:04:24this morning, so a close above 259.31 would give us a buy signal on Thursday.
-
00:04:31Moving on to the Canadian market.
-
00:04:32We've got the TSX just closing above the upper channel line.
-
00:04:36Similar situation for the TSX 60.
-
00:04:39Then we're looking at midcap still in the channel.
-
00:04:42We've got small caps trading below the
-
00:04:44lower channel line, and we had another nice big update for the venture exchange.
-
00:04:50What worked yesterday?
-
00:04:51Well, the big leader was Health Care
-
00:04:54followed by Consumer Staples and then infotec.
-
00:04:56Now, health care is a very small part of the Canadian stock market, so we do have
-
00:05:02the health care index back on a buy signal.
-
00:05:04Yesterday's big winner was Bosh in percentage terms.
-
00:05:07But again, not a lot of stocks in this sector.
-
00:05:10And last year, we would have probably been
-
00:05:13highlighting some cannabis stock, but those days have come and gone.
-
00:05:18Canadian Consumer Staples had a nice big pop yesterday.
-
00:05:22So again, if we're heading for a recession, which apparently we're not
-
00:05:27according to the market, consumer staples should certainly be outperforming Consumer
-
00:05:33Discretionary, but that's not the case at the moment.
-
00:05:35So the big winner in consumer staples was Circle K trading right up to resistance at
-
00:05:4268.75. Now, I don't like chasing stocks that pop.
-
00:05:45When they pop like this, it means everyone was shocked by the news.
-
00:05:49Nobody was on the right side of this trade going into it.
-
00:05:53But people have been buying the dips in this stock for quite a while now.
-
00:05:57Now, I wouldn't be attracted to this stock because the average true range is so low.
-
00:06:03So it's not really a tradable stock.
-
00:06:05If you're looking at this stock, it's more of something to put in your portfolio on a
-
00:06:10longer term basis than trading it short term.
-
00:06:13So you might want to be looking at the
-
00:06:14weekly charts if this is a stock that you want to follow.
-
00:06:18Looking at energy stocks, they did trade
-
00:06:21up yesterday, not enough to give us a buy signal.
-
00:06:23Financial services, on the other hand, back on a buy signal.
-
00:06:26Bank stocks looking for a slightly higher move here.
-
00:06:31We're just less than a dollar away from generating a buy signal on Thursday.
-
00:06:38What didn't work yesterday?
-
00:06:40Gold stocks continued to be on a sell
-
00:06:43signal here, trying to hold support at 270 on the TSX Global Gold Index.
-
00:06:48Now, oddly enough, the biggest loser on
-
00:06:50the TSX yesterday was Nova Gold, which was down over 12 % on the day coming into
-
00:06:56yesterday's trading action already on a sell signal.
-
00:06:59It has been for a while.
-
00:07:01Let's finish off today's presentation
-
00:07:03taking a look at commodities and we'll use the big US commodity ETFs.
-
00:07:07The USO moved up yesterday at close above 63.46 would give us a buy signal.
-
00:07:13We talked about the crude oil market yesterday and how I would
-
00:07:18give it a little more room than just taking the next buy signal.
-
00:07:22Gasoline moved up yesterday, trading up to the upper channel line.
-
00:07:25So a close above yesterday's high would give us another new buy signal.
-
00:07:29And unfortunately, natural gas rolled over yesterday.
-
00:07:32Still on a buy signal here that would change on Thursday with a close below
-
00:07:366.91. It was unchanged last time I looked at natural gas.
-
00:07:40So 7.81 acting as resistance as expected.
-
00:07:44Hopefully, we can turn around here and
-
00:07:47continue to move higher, but that's not what happened on Wednesday.
-
00:07:51Looking at the GLD, we had a new low for
-
00:07:53the GLD yesterday, new low for Palladian, new low for
-
00:07:57Platinum yesterday, and then last up, we're looking at silver.
-
00:08:01Silver is still close to the lower channel
-
00:08:03line, a close above 2134 on Thursday would give us a buy signal for the SLV.
-
00:08:09From what we're seeing in the premarket
-
00:08:10this morning, not expecting that to happen.
-
00:08:13Okay, folks, that is all for this
-
00:08:15morning's presentation and that's all from me for Thursday morning.
-
00:08:18Next time you'll hear my voice
-
00:08:19is on Friday morning.
