00:00:00Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Friday Morning.
-
00:00:03It's Stephen Whiteside here from the
-
00:00:04uptrend.com. In the pre market this morning, things are fairly quiet.
-
00:00:08We are coming up to employment numbers coming out at 830 this morning, and that
-
00:00:13could certainly add some volatility to the pre market trading action.
-
00:00:17Looking at yesterday's trading action, the
-
00:00:19VIX was able to trade above the previous high, but did not hold those gains.
-
00:00:24In fact, it closed slightly lower on the day.
-
00:00:27So we were able to trade above the top of
-
00:00:29the Fly Paper Channel, but we didn't really hold those gains at all.
-
00:00:33We were looking for movement up above $17.
-
00:00:36Got as high as 17.42 before closing just below $16.
-
00:00:42Now, a lot of movement is still happening
-
00:00:44in the bond market, and I'm not sure what the bond market is trying to tell us.
-
00:00:48I'm not sure anybody is, but they are
-
00:00:50certainly very aggressive in their actions.
-
00:00:53There's the XBB on the TSX, there's the TLT, and the 30 year bond.
-
00:00:58And the 30 year bond year yield now looks
-
00:01:01like that, which of course, is not helpful to the real estate market going forward.
-
00:01:06So that could certainly put a big damper
-
00:01:08on the economy if the real estate market starts to pull back aggressively.
-
00:01:13Now, yesterday we talked about the fact
-
00:01:15the market was probably on pause, waiting for earnings from Apple and Amazon.
-
00:01:19That has now happened, and they basically cancel each other out.
-
00:01:23Apple's earnings were taken negatively.
-
00:01:25It's trading down in the pre market while Amazon's earnings were taken positively.
-
00:01:30And it is popping in the pre market trading this morning.
-
00:01:34So we're coming in and we're on a sell signal right now.
-
00:01:37So our next price target is 137.50 and then 143 75.
-
00:01:42I certainly wouldn't chase Amazon up at these levels.
-
00:01:46I believe it's probably going to be a short term pop.
-
00:01:49And the stock, no matter how well it holds
-
00:01:52up, is still going to be pulled down during August and September.
-
00:01:56Then looking at the Ishares for the TSX 60 we traded down filled a gap.
-
00:02:00Trying to hold 30.47. If we don't hold
-
00:02:03that, then 30.08 would be our next target to the downside.
-
00:02:08Looking at the Dow, it is back on a sell signal as of Thursday's close, joining the
-
00:02:13S&P 500, the Nasdaq, and the semiconductors.
-
00:02:17Already on daily sell signals.
-
00:02:20Looking at commodity prices, crude oil moved up yesterday.
-
00:02:23Gasoline was down on the day, sitting
-
00:02:25right on the edge of a new daily sell signal.
-
00:02:28Just a couple of pennies to go.
-
00:02:30And then natural gas popped yesterday.
-
00:02:33It's holding support at 6.64. We're looking to see if we can get over 7.03.
-
00:02:38If we get over 7.03, that takes us back to 7.42. Then looking at the major energy
-
00:02:45ETFs, starting with the XLE, we were up just a little over 1% yesterday.
-
00:02:50Our next price target is 87 50.
-
00:02:52I may have misspoke on Thursday and said
-
00:02:5567.50. And once again, we hit it on Thursday.
-
00:02:59Looking at oil and gas equipment makers,
-
00:03:01the explorers, the small caps, and the TSX listed energy stocks.
-
00:03:05They were all up on Thursday.
-
00:03:07Now, we know that energy stocks are doing well.
-
00:03:10We know that crude oil is up.
-
00:03:11We know that technology stocks have been doing well.
-
00:03:13You'd think clean technology stocks would be doing well.
-
00:03:17Well, that's not the case. Now.
-
00:03:19When I saw this chart, I decided to go and
-
00:03:22look and see how some of the alternative energy ETFs were doing.
-
00:03:27And looking at global wind, not doing
-
00:03:29well, looking at global clean energy, not doing well right now.
-
00:03:34And you can see this particular ETF has
-
00:03:36not been doing well in 2023 with a series of lower highs and lower lows.
-
00:03:40Now there are some ETFs in the alternative
-
00:03:43energy space that are doing well right now.
-
00:03:46Well, so much for my intuition.
-
00:03:48You would think that with energy prices trending sharply higher, energy stocks
-
00:03:54trending sharply higher, technology stocks trending sharply higher, that clean
-
00:03:59technology stocks would also be trending sharply higher.
-
00:04:02And that is certainly not the case.
-
00:04:05Now, the price of gold was down yesterday.
-
00:04:07It's fairly stable in the pre market this morning.
-
00:04:09Price of silver was also lower.
-
00:04:11When we look at the gold and silver
-
00:04:13stocks, the GDX actually closed unchanged on Thursday.
-
00:04:17We saw the Ishares for the TSX global gold
-
00:04:21index down a little over a quarter of a percent, and a little more aggressive
-
00:04:25selling for silver miners, down nearly three quarters of a percent.
-
00:04:29But a fairly quiet day overall for the gold and silver mining stocks.
-
00:04:35Now, we're almost done.
-
00:04:36Let's take a look at some big cap
-
00:04:38technology stocks, starting with PayPal, which was down sharply yesterday.
-
00:04:43Hopefully you locked in some profits along the way.
-
00:04:46We traded up to previous resistance.
-
00:04:48Another early warning signal up there.
-
00:04:50The 200 day moving average looks like it
-
00:04:52played a role once again, which it did back earlier in the year.
-
00:04:56So that could have been a legitimate target to the upside.
-
00:05:00Or you could have used our price targets.
-
00:05:0368, 75 was the first one.
-
00:05:05And then we move up into the gap, 71.88, then 75.
-
00:05:10We were able to go up and fill that open
-
00:05:12gap and trade slightly above 75 for a couple of days before coming down.
-
00:05:17So you've had several opportunities to
-
00:05:19lock in profits along the way, and you should have just a partial position left.
-
00:05:24Of course, you're going to sell that at the open on Friday morning.
-
00:05:28Then looking at shopify, we're coming down
-
00:05:30to our next price targets and we're going to be looking to see if we can hold
-
00:05:34support in New York at 56 .25, in Toronto at $75.
-
00:05:39Now, if we break those, there's a nice open gap there from early May.
-
00:05:43And if we look at the panic zone chart, if we go down to retest the top of that gap,
-
00:05:49that's going to take us down to a reasonable projection, to the downside.
-
00:05:53If we're going to go down and fill the
-
00:05:55gap, that would be more panic selling, and that would certainly be a very negative
-
00:05:59sign for the overall technology sector if shopify were to get down to those levels.
-
00:06:05It's certainly possible in August and September.
-
00:06:07We'll just have to wait and see.
-
00:06:08But those are potential targets to the downside.
-
00:06:12Looking at Arc innovations, the ARK ETFs
-
00:06:15are all back on sell signals right now with the rest of the market.
-
00:06:19Notice that we put in a lower high last week.
-
00:06:21And the ARK.
-
00:06:23ETF that's getting hit the hardest right
-
00:06:25now is the Genomics ETF, which was down sharply the last couple of days.
-
00:06:31And then let's finish off with Lightspeed.
-
00:06:33Lightspeed had a wild day yesterday,
-
00:06:35making a new low before reversing and closing just above the upper channel line.
-
00:06:39It's trading down slightly in New York.
-
00:06:42Last time I looked, it was down .25, $0.30. That, of course, can change.
-
00:06:47Whether you take the buy signal or not is up to you.
-
00:06:50I would certainly wait for the next close above the upper channel line to see if
-
00:06:55these investors know what they're doing at this time.
-
00:06:58Okay, folks, that is all for Friday morning.
-
00:07:01I see the employment numbers have come
-
00:07:02out, and I see stock index futures have not changed that much.
-
00:07:06Enjoy the rest of your day.
-
00:07:08Next time you'll hear my voice is on Sunday.
