Description
-
00:00:00Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Monday morning.
-
00:00:03It's Stephen Whiteside here from theuptrend.
-
00:00:06com.
-
00:00:07In the pre-market this morning, things are fairly quiet.
-
00:00:09Stock index futures and commodities are slightly below fair value, but there's
-
00:00:14certainly no sign of aggressive selling coming into Monday morning.
-
00:00:18Hey, I've been off a couple of days. I've been sick.
-
00:00:21That hasn't changed much.
-
00:00:22But last week, you couldn't have heard me speak.
-
00:00:25So the first time I've had a cold since before COVID.
-
00:00:29So hopefully this won't continue for very long.
-
00:00:32We've got Bitcoin and Ethereum both
-
00:00:35hitting new highs last week with the overall stock market.
-
00:00:39The VIX on a weekly basis is still on a sell signal.
-
00:00:43That's supportive for higher stock prices.
-
00:00:45On a daily basis, we're back on a sell signal as of Friday's close, and of
-
00:00:49course, that can be supportive for higher stock prices going forward.
-
00:00:55Now, the VIX did trade up through $15 as
-
00:00:58we were expecting, and we did get some gyrations in the market.
-
00:01:03Remember, we had a daily sell signal in the Dow, then we had a daily signal in the
-
00:01:07Nasdaq, and both of them flipped back during the week.
-
00:01:12And so we're fully back on daily buy signals for all the major indices.
-
00:01:16Looking at the S&P 500, it has broken through 5,000.
-
00:01:20It is still closing above it.
-
00:01:22It certainly dipped through it last week, so it's not a huge area of support.
-
00:01:27It's just we are trading above a psychological number.
-
00:01:30We'll have to see how long we can stay
-
00:01:32above it, but we certainly closed above the previous week's high.
-
00:01:36That had a lot to do with NVIDIA, which came out with earnings, and we got a sell
-
00:01:42signal going into earnings, and then the next morning, we woke up and
-
00:01:47saw that after the earnings announcement, traders traded the stock sharply higher,
-
00:01:53and so there was no reason to take that sell signal.
-
00:01:56So far in 2024, NVIDIA is up another 59% leading the S&P 500 higher for the year.
-
00:02:05Then we've got Metta up 36.
-
00:02:0737%, and then we've got Eli Lilly up 32.
-
00:02:1201 %.
-
00:02:13Tapestry up 33.
-
00:02:1589 %.
-
00:02:17Catalent up 30.
-
00:02:198 % so far in 2024.
-
00:02:23Now, what hasn't worked on the S&P 500?
-
00:02:26Well, I'm not going to go through too many
-
00:02:27of them, but MarketAxess is the big loser, followed by Arthur Daniels Midland.
-
00:02:32And then the only gold mining stock in the
-
00:02:35S&P 500 Newmont down over 24% year to date.
-
00:02:39And that's, of course, not a good sign for
-
00:02:41a Canadian investor who follows a lot of gold stocks.
-
00:02:44Now, looking at the TSX, the TSX is also making new highs right now.
-
00:02:48And as you can see, we still have a ways to go before we hit the all-time high, but
-
00:02:54we are certainly clearing the highs from 2023.
-
00:02:582023 was a very rough year for the TSX.
-
00:03:01We couldn't get everybody lined up at the same time.
-
00:03:04Information technology did well throughout the year.
-
00:03:07Now, we've got financials back in sync with the rest of the market.
-
00:03:12We've got energy stocks moving higher.
-
00:03:14That can help the TSX.
-
00:03:15Then, unfortunately, gold stocks made a new low last week.
-
00:03:19Even though the price of gold was up on
-
00:03:21the week, gold stocks are not in favor at the moment.
-
00:03:26Now, so far in 2024, Celestica has been
-
00:03:29the big winner up over 40%, looking at Aritzia up over 32%, and then we've
-
00:03:35got Trisura, up over 27%, and then we've got Tricon, up nearly 25%.
-
00:03:41That stock looks like it's going to be taken out.
-
00:03:44Then SSR mining is the big loser on the
-
00:03:47TSX, down over 55%, followed by a NovaGold, down over 34% year to date.
-
00:03:55Let's finish off with a quick look at commodities.
-
00:03:58Crude oil is down on the week, still holding We have it in there.
-
00:04:01We did not close below the previous week's low.
-
00:04:04Natural gas up 1% in change on the week.
-
00:04:07No change in trend there.
-
00:04:09Then looking at a couple of the inflation
-
00:04:11components, we've got corn making a new low.
-
00:04:13We've got soy beans down at the previous low from last year.
-
00:04:17Then we're looking at wheat, and wheat's
-
00:04:19holding the low that it hit a couple of months ago, so no change in trend there.
-
00:04:24Then looking at copper.
-
00:04:25Copper is back on a weekly buy signal as of Friday's close.
-
00:04:29Gold was It's up on the week, up over $25, closing just above the previous week's
-
00:04:34high, which could turn out to be bullish for the price of gold.
-
00:04:38Then we've got the price of silver,
-
00:04:39unfortunately, going the opposite direction.
-
00:04:41So we're still on a weekly sell signal for silver.
-
00:04:44They And then, Coco hit a new high.
-
00:04:46Look for upward pressure on the price of chocolate bars or the
-
00:04:52quality of those chocolate bars is going to continue to deteriorate.
-
00:04:56Okay, folks, that is all for this morning's presentation.
-
00:04:59So far, it It looks like we're going to
-
00:05:00have a fairly quiet open on Monday morning.
-
00:05:03Have a great day.
-
00:05:04Next time, you'll hear my voice, hopefully on Tuesday morning.
-
00:05:35Good morning.
