00:00:00Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Wednesday morning.
-
00:00:02It's Stephen Whiteside here from TheUpTrend.com.
-
00:00:05In the pre-market this morning, things are fairly mixed.
-
00:00:08We do have the Dow trading higher while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq are trading lower.
-
00:00:14Now, the Dow is being led higher this morning by Walmart, which announced a
-
00:00:18stock split, and it is trading up, filling the open gap from back in November.
-
00:00:24Now, it is month-end.
-
00:00:25Month-end usually has a bullish bias to it, but this week is a little different.
-
00:00:29We've got a lot of earnings There's a lot of economic numbers coming out.
-
00:00:32We also have the Fed meeting going on, which concludes this afternoon.
-
00:00:36We always look for volatility to expand after the Fed meeting comes to an end.
-
00:00:42Looking at the VIX, the VIX is still on a
-
00:00:44sell signal here, but is trying to break out, and we're looking for a close above
-
00:00:4914.02 on Wednesday to tell us that something new is happening in the VIX.
-
00:00:53But we know that the VIX has traded up to
-
00:00:5515 over the past couple of weeks, and the market really hasn't been that concern.
-
00:01:01So a breakout above 15 would certainly be a sign that the market is starting to
-
00:01:05change its bias from being bullish to being bearish.
-
00:01:10Looking at the Dow, it made a new high yesterday on the back of J.
-
00:01:13P. Morgan and Goldman Sachs.
-
00:01:15What didn't work on the Dow on Tuesday?
-
00:01:17Well, Boeing was down.
-
00:01:19It's still holding 200.
-
00:01:20It is still holding 200 in the pre-market.
-
00:01:23But if it starts to break down, then that
-
00:01:27would probably head us down towards the October lows.
-
00:01:31Now, we had a small pullback in the S&P 500 on Tuesday.
-
00:01:34The big winner was MSCI, gapping up over 9% on the day.
-
00:01:39At the same time, we had UPS gaping lower, down over 8% on the day.
-
00:01:45Fairly quiet trading for the Nasdaq 100, going into all the earnings.
-
00:01:49We had an inside day for the Nasdaq 100.
-
00:01:52The big winner was Vertex Pharmaceuticals.
-
00:01:56At the same time, we also hear that Novo Nordisk is up in European trading this
-
00:02:02morning, and it is now valued at more than $500 billion.
-
00:02:07It's the second European company to do that.
-
00:02:10Now, what didn't work on the Nasdaq 100
-
00:02:11yesterday was DoorDash and setting up for a potential sell signal on Wednesday with
-
00:02:17a close below $104.59. Now, we had an inside day for the
-
00:02:22Russell 2000, an inside day for US microcaps.
-
00:02:26Technology stocks fairly quiet yesterday.
-
00:02:28We may see a sell signal today.
-
00:02:30There's lots of the big cap tech stocks
-
00:02:32trading lower this morning, and we do have Apple back on a sell signal.
-
00:02:37Now, semiconductors already on a sell signal, so no change in trend there.
-
00:02:41Now, when we look at sectors, what worked
-
00:02:43on Tuesday was the energy sector with crude oil trading higher.
-
00:02:47The USO was up, and then it was the Oil and Gas Explorers
-
00:02:51up 1.78%. The energy sector itself was up just a little over 1%, and then it was
-
00:02:58Marathon Petroleum was the big winner, up over 6% on the day.
-
00:03:03We also had financials trade higher, a new
-
00:03:05high for the Financials ETF, and Citigroup was up over 5% on the day.
-
00:03:10So Citigroup gapping higher on Tuesday.
-
00:03:14Then looking at the Magnificent 8, and a lot of these are trading down sharply in
-
00:03:19the pre-market this morning, so we may see some additional sell signals.
-
00:03:23We've got Alphabets still on a buy signal.
-
00:03:25It's down in the pre-market this morning.
-
00:03:27We also have Apple back on a sell buy signal as of Tuesday's close.
-
00:03:32We were concerned about Apple not being able to get up to $200.
-
00:03:37Then we've got Amazon still on a buy signal here.
-
00:03:40We've got Meta making a new high yesterday.
-
00:03:43New high for Microsoft on Tuesday, new high for NVIDIA.
-
00:03:48Then looking at Tesla, no change in trend for Tesla.
-
00:03:52Now, Tesla was able to trade up into the gap.
-
00:03:55It did not close above the high of that day.
-
00:03:59We are We're looking at Tesla actually
-
00:04:01trading lower in the pre-market this morning, so no change in trend for Tesla.
-
00:04:06Let's finish off looking at the miners.
-
00:04:08We've got copper miners still on a buy signal here inside day on Tuesday.
-
00:04:13The GLD is back on a buy signal, still waiting for the gold miners.
-
00:04:17We're looking for a close for the GDX
-
00:04:20above $28.54 on Wednesday to give us a buy signal.
-
00:04:26For the Junior Gold Miners, we're looking
-
00:04:27for a close above $34.77. We've got the silver on a buy signal right now.
-
00:04:33Silver Miners also on a buy signal trading back into the channel yesterday.
-
00:04:38So if we see some selling on Wednesday, we're looking for a close below $25.34.
-
00:04:45Okay, folks, that is all for this morning's presentation.
-
00:04:48There's a lot of pre-market action this morning, most of it to the downside.
-
00:04:53Of course, we don't act on pre-market activity.
-
00:04:56We wait until we see the actual closing
-
00:04:59price, and we are looking for volatility to expand this afternoon after the Fed
-
00:05:04meeting comes to an end and they start speaking to the public.
-
00:05:08Have a great day on Wednesday, folks.
-
00:05:10Next time you'll hear my voice is on Thursday morning, and at that time, we'll
-
00:05:13take a closer look at the Canadian stock market.
-
00:05:43Market.
