-
00:00:00Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Wednesday morning.
-
00:00:02It's Stephen Whiteside here from theuptrend.com.
-
00:00:06In the premarket this morning, things are
-
00:00:07fairly quiet, stock index futures are down across the board.
-
00:00:11Not enough to get anybody overly bearish
-
00:00:14on Wednesday morning, but we did see the VIX move up yesterday.
-
00:00:18If the VIX continues to move higher, we need to see a close above $15.71, and
-
00:00:23that, of course, would be bearish for the stock market.
-
00:00:27On Tuesday, we saw the US dollar index
-
00:00:30make a new high for this move, breaking out above the high from late May.
-
00:00:35And, of course, the corresponding move
-
00:00:37down from other currencies, including the euro and the Canadian dollar.
-
00:00:42If you were with us on Tuesday, we took a
-
00:00:44look at the price of gold and some of the corresponding ETFs.
-
00:00:49I mentioned that this sector looks fairly
-
00:00:51weak as we were making a series of lower highs and lower lows.
-
00:00:55Gold moved back in the channel yesterday,
-
00:00:57looking for a close below $1944.50 on Wednesday.
-
00:01:02Now, while we're waiting for the price of gold to generate a sell signal, the price
-
00:01:06of silver has already done so it was down sharply yesterday back on a sell signal.
-
00:01:11Now, we saw the major gold stocks roll over yesterday.
-
00:01:15We've got the major gold and silver ETFs back on sell signals.
-
00:01:19So looking at the GDX, the XGD, and the SIL all ending Tuesday on sell signals.
-
00:01:28Now, we also looked at the energy sector on Tuesday and in the premarket, crude oil
-
00:01:33was trading higher and ended the day higher.
-
00:01:36If you're trading the USO, our next price target was 78.13, congratulations.
-
00:01:40You had got orders filled yesterday.
-
00:01:43You should have orders in at 81.25 as our next target.
-
00:01:47Then look at the price of gasoline.
-
00:01:49It slipped a little yesterday.
-
00:01:51You should be anticipating that the demand
-
00:01:55for gasoline starts to taper off here as the summer driving season comes to an end.
-
00:02:00Yesterday was a bearish reversal day.
-
00:02:02Pros have given up control already and are heading lower.
-
00:02:05They're anticipating lower gasoline prices to go along with lower natural gas prices.
-
00:02:11Natural gas gap lower yesterday
-
00:02:14down to our next price target of 664 closed at 665.
-
00:02:18Now, if we take out the August lows and of course, that hasn't happened yet, look two
-
00:02:23lines down to 5.86, that would take us back to the lows from May of this year.
-
00:02:29Looking at energy stocks, they continue to
-
00:02:32move higher on Tuesday with the XEG and the XLE, both making new highs.
-
00:02:39Next up, let's take a look at the major
-
00:02:41stock market index ETFs that we follow, starting with the Ishares for the TSX60.
-
00:02:47This is looking pretty bearish.
-
00:02:48We closed below Friday's low after making a new high.
-
00:02:52It looks like we may have topped here.
-
00:02:54Of course, yesterday, the energy sector helped hold the TSX up, while mining
-
00:02:59stocks helped pull it down and it looks like the mining stocks won.
-
00:03:04Looking at the DOW Diamonds, we're trading back in the channel, looking for a close
-
00:03:08on Wednesday below $345.57. We had a bearish reversal signal on Thursday.
-
00:03:13Pros have not taking control while we've
-
00:03:17been on a buy signal for a few days now, so that's a bearish sign.
-
00:03:21Then looking at the S&P 500, fairly quiet trading on Wednesday.
-
00:03:26On Friday, we did hit our next target.
-
00:03:28Our next target was 453.13. We hit a high
-
00:03:33of 453.67. If you had an order in, it got filled on Friday, so congratulations.
-
00:03:39Looking at the QQQ's, a fairly quiet
-
00:03:41trading yesterday, inside day for the queues closing higher on the day.
-
00:03:46Then we had to pull back in
-
00:03:48semiconductors, still trading and closing above the upper channel line.
-
00:03:52Let's finish off today's presentation,
-
00:03:54walking through the most actives from New York and Toronto, starting in New York.
-
00:03:59Tesla was up on the day, but had an inside
-
00:04:02day, so it's really a day of indecision there.
-
00:04:05We're still on a buy signal, still trading and closing above the upper channel line.
-
00:04:10New high for a Tillray.
-
00:04:12And oddly enough, right at the top of the
-
00:04:14most actively traded US stocks yesterday, Advanced Micro Devices.
-
00:04:18Second day of a buy signal here, but I'm anticipating that we're going to have
-
00:04:22trouble at 112.50. That has held us in check for the last few weeks.
-
00:04:28No joy for Bank of America.
-
00:04:30Then we've got Apple and there seems to be
-
00:04:34a lot of sellers in just up here at the top of the open gap.
-
00:04:39We have not been able to fill that gap.
-
00:04:41We've been up here for the past three days
-
00:04:44trying and so far it looks like we've seen a wall of sellers up at this level.
-
00:04:49Then looking at Intel, new high for Intel.
-
00:04:52Unfortunately, we did not hit 37.50, got as high as 37.41 before pulling back.
-
00:04:58So sorry about that.
-
00:05:00If you had orders in at 37.50, Amazon, fairly quiet day, still on a buy signal.
-
00:05:06No change for NIO, still on a sell signal here.
-
00:05:09That would change on Wednesday with a close above $11.19. And then NVIDIA.
-
00:05:15Nvidia still struggling to break out above
-
00:05:18500, still on a buy signal that has not changed.
-
00:05:22Last up, let's take a look at the most
-
00:05:24actively traded Canadian stocks and a lot of new highs here for the energy sector,
-
00:05:29starting with Suncor and then Canadian Natural Resources.
-
00:05:32Manulife had a fairly quiet day yesterday.
-
00:05:35A small pullback did not close below the previous days low.
-
00:05:39TC Energy struggling here made a new high for this move.
-
00:05:43Then looking at Way, making a new high and then a new high for Baytech.
-
00:05:48Bank of Nova Scotia, big outside reversal day yesterday.
-
00:05:52It's moved up nicely over the past couple
-
00:05:55of days, but unfortunately, that looks like it's come to an end.
-
00:05:59Athabasca Oil Sands, new high there.
-
00:06:01No joy for the TD bank.
-
00:06:03It's been struggling to generate a new buy signal here.
-
00:06:06We need a close on Wednesday above $83.46. And then the first gold stock to
-
00:06:13show up on the most active list was B2gold.
-
00:06:15It rolled over yesterday back on a sell signal.
-
00:06:18And that's not much of after generating a
-
00:06:22buy signal, really no fall through to the upside.
-
00:06:25So B2gold investors just been sitting on
-
00:06:28their hands for the past couple of weeks, and now we're back on a sell signal.
-
00:06:32Last up this morning looking at Shopify.
-
00:06:34Shopify is still holding up at these levels.
-
00:06:37We're trying to get to 93.75. You had the opportunity to lock in some
-
00:06:42profits at 81.25 and then 87.50. 93.75 is still in reach.
-
00:06:48We did not close below the previous days low.
-
00:06:52So far it's not looking too bad, expecting
-
00:06:54a pullback at the open on Wednesday morning.
-
00:06:58If we start breaking down below 87.50,
-
00:07:00that'll probably be a clue that this particular move is coming to an end.
-
00:07:07Okay, folks, that is all for Wednesday morning.
-
00:07:09Still looking for a little selling at the open.
-
00:07:12Have a great day.
-
00:07:13Next time you'll hear my voice is on Thursday morning.
