Is It Time To Sell- 09072023

Description
-
00:00:00Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Thursday Morning.
-
00:00:02It's Stephen Whiteside here from the uptrend.com in the pre market this
-
00:00:06morning, stock index futures are below fair value, being led lower by the Nasdaq.
-
00:00:11We do have jobless claims coming out at
-
00:00:13830, and that could certainly add to the pre market volatility.
-
00:00:17Now, on Wednesday, we saw the VIX continue to move higher.
-
00:00:20That's not good for stocks on Thursday.
-
00:00:23We're looking for a close above 15.51. Now, with the VIX moving up over the past
-
00:00:28couple of days, it's been enough to roll the Dow over.
-
00:00:31The Dow is back on a sell signal as of Wednesday's close.
-
00:00:34Now, the biggest hit to the Dow on Wednesday was Apple.
-
00:00:37Apple came down sharply, bounced off the lower channel line.
-
00:00:41So a close below yesterday's low on
-
00:00:43Thursday would give us a sell signal for Apple.
-
00:00:46Now, the other stocks that pulled the Dow down were already on sell signals, whether
-
00:00:51you're looking at Boeing, followed by Amgen, followed by Johnson Johnson, then
-
00:00:56McDonald's and American Express, and then we've got Merck and Goldman Sachs, all
-
00:01:02already on sell signals, all moving lower, pulling the Dow down on Wednesday.
-
00:01:07Now, all of that selling was not enough to give us a sell signal for the S&P 500.
-
00:01:12So again, a close below yesterday's low would give us a sell signal on Thursday.
-
00:01:17And the Nasdaq still holding up fairly well, closing at the upper channel line.
-
00:01:21So while the Nasdaq is leading us lower in
-
00:01:24the pre market, it looks like the S& P 500 will be the next to roll over.
-
00:01:29Then we've got the Russell 2000 sitting
-
00:01:32right on the lower channel line, so not too much farther to go for a sell signal.
-
00:01:37And that would join micro caps that rolled over on Wednesday.
-
00:01:41Now, looking at sectors, the biggest drag on the US.
-
00:01:44Markets on Wednesday were the regional banks, followed by the banks themselves.
-
00:01:48And of course, there's lots of talk out
-
00:01:51there that some of these banks are going to get downgraded soon, and I guess
-
00:01:54investors are trying to get ahead of that happening.
-
00:01:57Of course, the biggest tell is going to be
-
00:01:59if we can hold the August lows as we move lower in September.
-
00:02:04Then looking at the Canadian market, we saw a lot of weakness yesterday.
-
00:02:08The TSX, the TSX 60, mid caps and small caps all pulled back into the channel,
-
00:02:14while the micro caps are back on a sell signal as of Wednesday's close.
-
00:02:20What worked yesterday?
-
00:02:21Well, Magna was up.
-
00:02:22We saw Canadian Apartments move up yesterday.
-
00:02:25We saw a new high for this move for Sun Life.
-
00:02:29Then we've got Saputo moving up slightly
-
00:02:32on the day, still on a buy signal here that would change on Thursday with a close
-
00:02:37below $28.47. Then Sonovis made a new high for this move on Wednesday.
-
00:02:43Then looking at what didn't work, well, Enbridge was the biggest loser yesterday,
-
00:02:48gapping lower, I guess they disappointed investors.
-
00:02:52Then we've got Algonquin Power back on a sell signal.
-
00:02:55We've got restaurants, brands back on a sell signal.
-
00:02:58We've got TC Energy just holding above the
-
00:03:02lower channel line, so a close below 48 42 on Thursday would give us a sell signal.
-
00:03:07Then looking at Emera hitting a new low for this move.
-
00:03:10It's been on a sell signal since late July.
-
00:03:14Last up a quick look at bond yields.
-
00:03:16And bond yields moved up on Wednesday whether you're looking at the five year or
-
00:03:20the ten year, and that can certainly spook the market if that trend continues.
-
00:03:25And of course, if bond yields are moving up, we may see bonds move lower.
-
00:03:30The TLT actually ticked up yesterday, the XBB ticked up yesterday.
-
00:03:36What didn't work was the emerging markets
-
00:03:38and junk bonds were both down on Wednesday.
-
00:03:42Okay, folks, that's all for Thursday morning.
-
00:03:44Still waiting for jobless claims.
-
00:03:46They could certainly add to the pre market volatility, but so far it looks like the
-
00:03:51market wants to do some selling at the Open on Thursday morning.
-
00:03:56Thank you very much for your time and attention.
-
00:03:57Next time you'll hear my voice is on Friday morning.
