-
00:00:00Good morning, everyone, and welcome to
-
00:00:02Thursday morning, the first trading day of February.
-
00:00:05My name is Stephen Whiteside from theuptrend.
-
00:00:07com.
-
00:00:08In the pre-market this morning, stock index futures are above fair value.
-
00:00:12Commodities are mixed with gold, lower,
-
00:00:14while crude oil is higher in the pre-market on Thursday morning.
-
00:00:20Now, seeing the market to trade up in the
-
00:00:22pre-market on the first trading day of the month is not unusual.
-
00:00:25Of course, we've got that automatic money
-
00:00:27hitting the market, and traders don't usually like to trade against that.
-
00:00:31Now, yesterday was a Fed day, and all we really know about Fed days is we expect
-
00:00:36volatility to expand after 2:00 PM, and that's certainly what happened yesterday.
-
00:00:41Now, yesterday started off as an
-
00:00:42interesting day because the market actually gapped lower.
-
00:00:45This is an intraday chart of the Nasdaq 100.
-
00:00:48Then you can see once the Fed announcement came out, the market got bullish.
-
00:00:53Then once the Fed chairman started to speak, the market got very bearish and
-
00:00:57closed at the low of the day, taking out the low from the early morning session.
-
00:01:03So that is a bearish sign, and it equated into a sell signal for the Nasdaq 100.
-
00:01:11Now, there's Alphabet, which gapped lower.
-
00:01:13That's what started things off in the morning.
-
00:01:15By the end of the day, Amazon was back on
-
00:01:17a sell signal, joining Apple already on a sell signal.
-
00:01:21Microsoft came down hard yesterday, landed
-
00:01:23right at the lower channel line, so a close below 397.01 would give us a sell
-
00:01:29signal on Thursday, and then that would join Tesla already on a sell signal.
-
00:01:34Still trading below last week's low,
-
00:01:36and we'll have to see if that can continue to hold on Thursday.
-
00:01:41Taking a look at the biggest loser on the Nasdaq 100 yesterday, it was Lululemon
-
00:01:45already on a sell signal, so no change in trend there.
-
00:01:49The biggest losing sector in North America on Wednesday was the regional bank sector.
-
00:01:54There's a regional bank in New York which
-
00:01:57is having some trouble at the moment, and that put downward pressure on that sector.
-
00:02:02Now, with the Nasdaq 100 back on a sell signal, we also have a sell signal for the
-
00:02:062X Bull ETF and a new buy signal for the 2X Bear ETF.
-
00:02:11Now, technology stocks have been in a huge
-
00:02:14uptrend, and Any of the buy signals for the Bear ETF have not lasted very long.
-
00:02:19That could happen again, but we can't tell
-
00:02:21the future, so you still have to take the trade.
-
00:02:24Yes, the major uptrend in US technology stocks is still there.
-
00:02:28That has not broken, but this is a short
-
00:02:31term chart, and we're trying to react to the market on a short term basis.
-
00:02:36Looking at the Canadian stock market for
-
00:02:38the month of January, it was up just under a third of a %.
-
00:02:41At the same time, the venture exchange ended the month down just under half a %.
-
00:02:46If you haven't heard me say this before,
-
00:02:48the market is a lot more fun when the Venture Exchange
-
00:02:51is moving higher, and unfortunately, that's not the case so far in 2024.
-
00:02:57Looking at the iShares for the TSX-60, we were down just under 1% yesterday, so
-
00:03:02looking for a close on Thursday below 32. 03. With the futures trading up in the
-
00:03:07pre-market this morning, so far, it doesn't look like that's going to happen.
-
00:03:11Now, yesterday, the Canadian market was
-
00:03:12down across the board, and the biggest loser was Health Care.
-
00:03:16Of all these sectors, health care is probably the most irrelevant.
-
00:03:19It's only a handful of stocks.
-
00:03:21There's the health care index making a new low for 2024.
-
00:03:25It was led lower yesterday by Tilray, making a new closing low for as well.
-
00:03:31Now, looking at the IT sector, technology stocks were down 1.19% on the day, still
-
00:03:37trading and closing above the upper channel line.
-
00:03:40We certainly didn't get as hit hard as US tech stocks did.
-
00:03:45A lot of the Canadian ETFs that have a
-
00:03:48global view of technology stocks, including the TD Global Technology Leaders
-
00:03:53ETF, are back on sell signals as of Wednesday's close.
-
00:03:57Then looking at financials.
-
00:03:59Financials did pull yesterday.
-
00:04:00We saw a weakness in US financials, and we were down 1.1% on the day.
-
00:04:05Looking for a close on Thursday below 47. 55 to give us a sell signal for that ETF.
-
00:04:12Moving on to the world of commodities.
-
00:04:14We did have crude oil down a $1.97 yesterday.
-
00:04:17It's up 65 cents in the pre-market this morning.
-
00:04:20Natural gas was up yesterday.
-
00:04:22It's down slightly in the pre-market this morning.
-
00:04:24Energy stocks had an inside day on Wednesday.
-
00:04:28Then looking at gold, gold was up over $16 yesterday.
-
00:04:31It's down over $17 in the pre-market.
-
00:04:34Now, that is a buy signal.
-
00:04:36If I was waiting to buy gold, I would sit
-
00:04:39on my hands this morning and wait for the next close above the upper chain line when
-
00:04:43I see that the commodity is down more than it was up yesterday.
-
00:04:47There's no reason to take a buy signal on Thursday morning.
-
00:04:50Silver was down 56 cents yesterday.
-
00:04:53It's down another 36 cents in the pre-market.
-
00:04:56We may be heading towards a sell signal for silver.
-
00:04:59Gold stocks are still on a sell signal.
-
00:05:02No change in trend as of Wednesday's close.
-
00:05:05Let's finish off this morning's presentation, taking a look at the TSX
-
00:05:08most actives from Wednesday's trading action.
-
00:05:12Embridge made a new low for 2024
-
00:05:14yesterday, while Manulife made a new high for 2024 on Wednesday.
-
00:05:18We saw the TD Bank pulled back all the way down to the lower channel line, so it
-
00:05:24closed below $81.46 would give us a sell signal on Thursday.
-
00:05:28Inside day for next Nexgen.
-
00:05:30Then we've got the Bank of Montreal back on a sell signal as of Wednesday's close.
-
00:05:35Fairly quiet trading yesterday for Bitfarm, traded back in the channel,
-
00:05:40closing slightly higher on the day, just by a penny.
-
00:05:44We're looking for a close below $2.89 on Thursday for Bitfarm.
-
00:05:49Inside day for the Bank in Nova Scotia on Wednesday, still on a buy signal.
-
00:05:54Then we've got Denison Mines trading above
-
00:05:56the upper channel line, still on a buy signal here.
-
00:05:59No joy for the Royal Bank.
-
00:06:01The Royal Bank is still on a sell signal.
-
00:06:04That's hard to believe that we've traded sideways for this length of time.
-
00:06:08Then looking at Cenovus, a quiet trading
-
00:06:11on Wednesday inside day, still on a buy signal.
-
00:06:14No joy for Sprott.
-
00:06:15Sprott Uranium, we're looking for a close on Thursday above
-
00:06:19$31.72. Then the first gold stock to come up on the most active list was B2Gold, and
-
00:06:26it closed lower on the day, even though the price of gold It closed higher.
-
00:06:31It was down three cents, still on a sell signal.
-
00:06:33That would change on Thursday with a close above $3.88. From what we're seeing in the
-
00:06:38pre-market this morning, we're not expecting that to happen.
-
00:06:41Now, TELUS is back on a sell signal, and we had that big It's not up in the telcos
-
00:06:46recently, but TELUS is back on a sell signal.
-
00:06:50Okay, folks, that is all for this morning's presentation.
-
00:06:53So far, it looks like we're going to see some buying at the open on Thursday
-
00:06:56morning, but we may see some selling in the gold sector on Thursday.
-
00:07:01Have a great day.
-
00:07:02And next time you'll hear my voice is on
-
00:07:04Friday morning, and at that time, we'll take a closer look at the US stock market.
