-
00:00:00Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Thursday morning.
-
00:00:02It's Stephen Whiteside here from theuptrend.com.
-
00:00:06In the pre-market this morning, things are fairly quiet.
-
00:00:08Stock index futures and commodities are currently trading above fair value.
-
00:00:12We do have inflation and employment numbers coming out at 8:30 this morning,
-
00:00:16and that could add to the pre-market volatility.
-
00:00:19The VIX is still on a sell signal that is supportive for higher stock prices.
-
00:00:23That would change on Thursday if the VIX were to close above 13.78.
-
00:00:28Now, we were hoping to get the US dollar index to start falling again.
-
00:00:32That would be supportive for higher stock prices, but so far that's not the case.
-
00:00:36The US dollar index was down slightly.
-
00:00:37Yesterday, had an inside day, so no change there.
-
00:00:41And bonds, we want bonds to start moving
-
00:00:43up to put more downward pressure on bond yields and interest rates.
-
00:00:47That's not happening at the moment.
-
00:00:49If you're looking at the TLT or the XBB, where we did see money going to bonds in
-
00:00:54the emerging markets and junk bonds were both up yesterday.
-
00:00:58Junk bonds are actually back on a buy a buy signal.
-
00:01:00So a mixed picture in the bond market.
-
00:01:02Us dollar index so far not supportive for higher stock prices here, but we'll see
-
00:01:07how the market reacts to those numbers coming out at 8:30 this morning.
-
00:01:11Now, the DOW is still on a buy signal here up at all time highs.
-
00:01:15At the same time, we still have 11 of the Dow 30 stocks on daily sell signals, and
-
00:01:20we'll take a look at that in a few minutes.
-
00:01:23The S&P 500 continued to move up yesterday.
-
00:01:26We had the Nasdaq continue to move higher on Wednesday as well.
-
00:01:31Not a lot of joy for the Russell 2000 or for the microcaps.
-
00:01:35They're still on sell signals here.
-
00:01:37Still both trading below the lower channel line.
-
00:01:40Now, looking at the Canadian market, a
-
00:01:42very quiet trading on Wednesday for the TSX composite and the TSAX 60.
-
00:01:48We've got mid-caps back on a buy signal,
-
00:01:51small caps still on a sell signal, and microcaps still on a buy signal here.
-
00:01:56So a mixed picture.
-
00:01:57In 2024, it's been the Communication
-
00:02:00Services, the telecom stocks that have been holding the TSX up.
-
00:02:05Now, looking at the Dow 30, 11 of the Dow 30 stocks are still on daily sell signals,
-
00:02:10and we can go through those fairly quickly.
-
00:02:12Still waiting for Apple to generate a buy signal.
-
00:02:15American Express rolled over on Wednesday,
-
00:02:18is back on a sell signal, joining Boeing already on a sell signal.
-
00:02:21Then we've got Chevron, Walt Disney,
-
00:02:25Dow, Honeywell, IBM, and Intel, both still on sell signals.
-
00:02:30That could certainly change on Thursday.
-
00:02:33Then we've got Nike still on a sell signal, no change there.
-
00:02:37And last up, Walgreens Boots still on a sell signal, no change in trend there.
-
00:02:42Okay, folks, that is all for this morning's presentation.
-
00:02:45Waiting for those economic numbers to come
-
00:02:47out to see which way the market is going to go.
-
00:02:50Depending on what happens today, we've got more economic numbers coming out on Friday
-
00:02:55that, again, could change the direction of the market.
-
00:02:58Again, only time will how the market will react to those numbers.
-
00:03:03Enjoy the rest of your day.
-
00:03:04Next time you'll hear my voice is on Friday morning..
