-
00:00:00Good morning, everyone.
-
00:00:01Welcome to Monday morning.
-
00:00:02It's Stephen Whiteside here from theuptrend.
-
00:00:05com.
-
00:00:05In the pre-market this morning, things are fairly quiet.
-
00:00:08We have stock index futures trading right around fair value.
-
00:00:11Commodities are trading lower with both
-
00:00:13gold and crude oil, down in the pre-market on Monday morning.
-
00:00:17We have no major economic numbers coming out today, so it's all about people
-
00:00:22getting over their hangovers from Sunday night's football game.
-
00:00:26Now, last week, the S&P 500 was finally
-
00:00:29able to close above 5,000, and did the week above that level.
-
00:00:32Hasn't broken away from 5,000 just yet, but it's still looking very bullish.
-
00:00:37Now, while the stock market is making all-time highs, you'd think the VIX would
-
00:00:41be making all-time lows, but that is not the case.
-
00:00:44We are still on a weekly sell signal here that's supportive for higher stock prices.
-
00:00:48That would change this coming Friday if we were to close above 14.
-
00:00:5280. Now, looking at a daily chart of the VIX,
-
00:00:55we're still on a sell signal here that's supportive for higher stock prices.
-
00:00:58Things would change on Monday today if the VIX were to close above 13.
-
00:01:0288.
-
00:01:03Now, if we stand back a bit, we can see that the VIX was able to head up over 15
-
00:01:09in January, and the market really didn't seem to be too concerned about that.
-
00:01:14We did not have a major sell-off in January, so we're really looking for a
-
00:01:19breakout above 15 to tell us that the market is really concerned about the
-
00:01:24prospects for the stock market going forward.
-
00:01:27Now, you may have seen or heard a headline
-
00:01:30like this over the past week, and we are in a unique period for the stock market.
-
00:01:35If we go back to October, we were looking for a seasonal low.
-
00:01:39We are looking for a move up into a
-
00:01:41Christmas rally, and then we weren't looking for much more than that.
-
00:01:46The market has surprised everybody and
-
00:01:49continued that Christmas rally into the new year.
-
00:01:52Here we are halfway through February, and we're still making higher highs.
-
00:01:56We haven't seen that in quite a while.
-
00:01:58Here's the rally that they're talking about in 1972.
-
00:02:03Now, we did not peak at that point in March of '72.
-
00:02:08If we look at a monthly chart here, we actually peaked later in the year.
-
00:02:11But once we peaked, we had a huge sell-off
-
00:02:14over the next couple of years, and we lost about 50% of the market's value.
-
00:02:19Now, I'm using a monthly chart here
-
00:02:21because I just wanted to show you another historical event, and that was the fact
-
00:02:24that it took 10 years to get back to where we were in late 1972.
-
00:02:31That is also another piece of history that people may not be talking about.
-
00:02:37It's one thing to talk about the major rally.
-
00:02:40It's another thing to talk about the major decline that happened afterwards.
-
00:02:45Now, a lot of people are talking about the
-
00:02:46Dot Com Bubble and looking at a potential AI bubble that's going on right now.
-
00:02:52And there are a lot of stocks doing really well at the moment.
-
00:02:55There are a handful of mega cap stocks
-
00:02:57that are also doing very well at the moment.
-
00:03:00So we've got Meta, we've got Microsoft, and of course, we've got NVIDIA.
-
00:03:04It's significant to watch these because they are huge, huge companies.
-
00:03:08It's not the fact that we've got a lot of
-
00:03:10companies doing well, it's that we've got these mega caps.
-
00:03:14Now, a year ago, it would have been Apple and Tesla that we would have been focused
-
00:03:18on, but they're not really in play in 2024.
-
00:03:22Now, if we go back to 2000 and look at that dot com bubble.
-
00:03:27Now, if NVIDIA is the backbone of the AI revolution, back in 2000, Cisco was the
-
00:03:33backbone of the Internet revolution, and technically it still is.
-
00:03:37All those data centers have Cisco equipment running them in the background.
-
00:03:42Now, Cisco eventually became a
-
00:03:46member of the Dow 30, so it is still a huge global company.
-
00:03:50Back in 2000, it peaked at a little over
-
00:03:52$80, and then over the next couple of years, it gave up everything.
-
00:03:56You go from a $10 stock to an $80 stock,
-
00:04:00you're doing pretty good, then you give it all up.
-
00:04:02Then Akamai, probably the start of the cloud computing revolution.
-
00:04:08This is a daily chart of Akamai.
-
00:04:10It was an IPO.
-
00:04:11I remember it coming out just like it was yesterday.
-
00:04:14It got as high as $344. 87.
-
00:04:18Then over the next couple of years, once the bubble burst, it gave up all of that
-
00:04:22and basically became a penny stock before recovering.
-
00:04:26Now, Yahoo, back in 2000, was the Google of its day, and it got as high as $125.
-
00:04:3303. And then over the next couple of years,
-
00:04:35after the bubble burst, we gave up all that, and it got down under $5 eventually.
-
00:04:41So history doesn't repeat itself, but it often rimes.
-
00:04:45And so we could see a AI bubble burst at some point.
-
00:04:50For that to happen, first of all, we need daily sell signals that turn into weekly
-
00:04:54sell signals that turn into monthly sell signals.
-
00:04:56That's when a bubble burst coming into Monday's trading action, We
-
00:05:00don't have daily sell signal, so nothing really to worry about on Monday morning.
-
00:05:05Now, looking at a weekly chart of the Dow
-
00:05:07Diamond, so we made a new closing high last week.
-
00:05:09A new closing high for the S&P 500 for the
-
00:05:12Nasdaq 100, even though equal related Nasdaq made a new high, and the next
-
00:05:17generation Nasdaq also made a new high last week.
-
00:05:21Who didn't make a new high?
-
00:05:22Well, iShares for the TSX-60 made a new
-
00:05:25high on the previous week and then pulled back ever so slightly last week.
-
00:05:29So No concern there.
-
00:05:31We're still closing above the upper channel line.
-
00:05:34Now, looking at the winners and losers for the week, it was the chip sector was the
-
00:05:37big winner, followed by biotechs, pharmaceuticals, and then the
-
00:05:42biggest winner in the Canadian market was the energy sector.
-
00:05:44But as you can see, we're not expecting a weekly change in trend this week.
-
00:05:49What didn't work?
-
00:05:50Well, anything that you mine basically got hit hard last week.
-
00:05:55Canadian gold stocks were the biggest
-
00:05:57losers, followed by the GDX followed by silver miners, followed by copper miners.
-
00:06:03So any ETF that was mining related, materials related, got hit hard last week.
-
00:06:08So no change in trend there.
-
00:06:11Now, looking at the world of commodities,
-
00:06:12we had crude oil move up last week and it's still on a buy signal here.
-
00:06:17No change in trend.
-
00:06:19We saw gasoline move higher, up over nine % on the week.
-
00:06:23At the same time, we had natural gas drop over 11 % on the week.
-
00:06:28So no change in trend for either of those two.
-
00:06:31The GLD pulled back.
-
00:06:33It's still on a buy signal here.
-
00:06:34Things would change this coming Friday if the GLD were to close below $185.
-
00:06:4084.
-
00:06:41No joy for Palladium making a new low.
-
00:06:43We saw platinum pull back.
-
00:06:45We saw silver close slightly lower on the week.
-
00:06:48No change in trend.
-
00:06:49We're still on a sell signal for silver.
-
00:06:52Now, somebody was asking me about
-
00:06:53commodity ETFs, and I haven't really explored them too much.
-
00:06:57We took a look at several that are on sell signals right now.
-
00:07:01Then there's one that's on a buy signal at
-
00:07:03the moment, and we were wondering what the differences were between those.
-
00:07:07When you look at this particular ETF, so we're looking at the GSG, it says it's a
-
00:07:14commodity ETF that doesn't actually own any commodities.
-
00:07:18It looks like all it owns at the moment is treasury bills.
-
00:07:21So that's a bit strange.
-
00:07:23I'm not sure how that exactly works, but I certainly wouldn't want to be using that
-
00:07:28to track the world of commodities at this time.
-
00:07:32Okay, folks, that is all for this morning's presentation.
-
00:07:35So far, it looks like we're going to see a fairly quiet open on Monday.
-
00:07:39Let's see if the S&P 500 can hold 5,000 throughout the week.
-
00:07:43Have a great day, folks.
-
00:07:45Next time you'll hear my voice is on Tuesday morning, and at that time, we'll
-
00:07:47take a closer look at the Canadian stock market.
