00:00:04Welcome back to truly Force free animal training
-
00:00:09A common question I get is, how do you introduce dogs? Whether you're getting a dog from a shelter or you're trying to introduce, your friends dogs to your dog introducing your dogs can be something that
-
00:00:20you have to be a little careful about especially if you don't know the history of the dogs
-
00:00:24If there are some dogs who love every dog and you don't have to worry about it
-
00:00:28And there are some dogs who don't like any dogs and so you wouldn't be introducing them anyway
-
00:00:32But the confusing part comes when you're not really sure how the two dogs are going to interact
-
00:00:37I'm going to demonstrate here a couple ways that I am introducing a new dog to one of my dogs that I'll use Captain, who knows a lot of dogs and is pretty comfortable, and he reads
-
00:00:50other dogs pretty well
-
00:00:51So I like to use him because if he's avoiding the other dog at means the other dog is probably giving off some anxiety signals
-
00:00:59And I want you to just be able to see it's really important to watch body language during this
-
00:01:04So as you're watching my this introduction, watch the body language because if one of them seems to be a little bit anxious, that's really important
-
00:01:13And I don't want to make them meet if one of them is a little bit nervous
-
00:01:16So how I like to introduce dogs, is to first have them both on leash, and just having them kind of be in my backyard or in a neutral area
-
00:01:27If that's more appropriate where they get a chance to see each other but they don't have to engage
-
00:01:32I don't allow them to do any hard stares and
-
00:01:35I try to keep them
-
00:01:36They look at the other dog and then I try to give them a treat or do something that makes it so that they get a little bit used to each other without having to be face-to-face
-
00:01:46right away. In some situations
-
00:01:48Though they don't look like they are getting very comfortable
-
00:01:51So I may have to do this introductory a few times before they get a chance to play, then if they are
-
00:01:58Are getting along, okay? And they seem to be doing better as we get closer
-
00:02:03I may a let them play
-
00:02:07Come On, Lukey
-
00:02:11Come here Lukey, Good Boy! Good boy.
-
00:02:16Maybe you can go in and get another sniff. You want another sniff?
-
00:02:24Luke, Luke. Good boy.
-
00:02:27Another technique that I do sometimes is I will take a dog for a walk with another dog and we parallel walk around the neighborhood or park and that sometimes gives them an opportunity to get used
-
00:02:39to each other
-
00:02:40But they are also distracted by the environment outside
-
00:02:42So sometimes that's another way that I might introduce two dogs. I hope this helps as you go forward and if you need to introduce your dog to another dog.
