-
00:00:00Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Wednesday morning.
-
00:00:02It's Stephen Whiteside here from theuptrend.com.
-
00:00:05In the premarket this morning, ahead of the inflation numbers that come out at
-
00:00:098:30, things are fairly quiet, not a lot of commitment either way.
-
00:00:13Of course, once those inflation numbers come out, we expect volatility to expand,
-
00:00:17have no idea which way the market is going to go after those numbers come out.
-
00:00:22So far, the VIX is still on a sell signal
-
00:00:25this week, which is supportive for higher stock prices.
-
00:00:28That would change on Wednesday if the VIX
-
00:00:30were to close, not trade, but close above $15.07. Now, how the Fed calculates
-
00:00:37inflation and all the things they're looking at, I'm not sure how they couldn't
-
00:00:42determine that inflation is still a major issue and they should raise rates.
-
00:00:46But the way that they look at the numbers
-
00:00:48and how they weight things, of course, changes over time.
-
00:00:52They could see something and just put a
-
00:00:55different weighting on it than the rest of us would.
-
00:00:57But when we look at commodity prices, we've got crude oil making a new high
-
00:01:01yesterday, gasoline up testing the recent high.
-
00:01:04Even natural gas came back yesterday, and
-
00:01:07we're looking at the UNG, and it recently made a lower-low.
-
00:01:12Now we'll have to see if it can break this short term pattern here and make a higher
-
00:01:16high, which would be short term bullish for natural gas.
-
00:01:21Now looking at some longer term commodity
-
00:01:23charts, looking at the bacon, you can see we're up at the highs of 2023.
-
00:01:28We've got hamburger up at the highs of 2023.
-
00:01:32We've got cocoa or chocolate up at the highs of 2023.
-
00:01:37That's a similar situation for underwear or cotton.
-
00:01:40Then we're looking at frozen concentrated orange juice up at the highs of 2023, and
-
00:01:46the price of sugar up at the highs of 2023.
-
00:01:49So all that is very inflationary.
-
00:01:53Of course, how the Fed looks at it is not
-
00:01:55the same as how you and I would look at it.
-
00:01:57Some commodities that are not up at the top of the range for 2023: coffee is
-
00:02:04actually down near the lows of 2023, and so is the price of lumber.
-
00:02:09Well, what worked on Tuesday?
-
00:02:11Well, it was the energy sector on both sides of the border.
-
00:02:15Looking at individual stocks, the biggest winner on the TSX 60 was Suncor.
-
00:02:19On the TSX itself, it was Vermilion.
-
00:02:22Looking at the S&P 500, when we're looking to energy stocks, the big
-
00:02:26winner was Occidental, followed by Marathon.
-
00:02:29Marathon had a big reversal day yesterday.
-
00:02:31If you're trading marathon, I want to sit on my hands for a day and see what happens
-
00:02:36next, see if we can get another confirming close above the upper channel line.
-
00:02:42Now, ahead of the energy stocks on the S&P
-
00:02:45500, the biggest winner was Zion followed by PNC, followed by Keycorp.
-
00:02:50Those were the biggest winners on the S&P 500.
-
00:02:53Now, those big gains were not enough to take the ETF back on a buy signal.
-
00:02:59We're still waiting for a buy signal for regional banks and banks to join
-
00:03:03the SPYDR Financial ETF already on a buy signal.
-
00:03:07That has more to do with broker dealers, but especially the insurance companies,
-
00:03:12which are trading back up at the recent highs.
-
00:03:15Looking north of the border, the TSX
-
00:03:17Financial Index is sitting right on the edge of a new buy signal.
-
00:03:20Banks moved up yesterday.
-
00:03:21They're getting pretty close to a buy signal.
-
00:03:23Then the big winner yesterday was the National Bank, and then we had the Royal
-
00:03:27Bank both trade up and closed in the channel.
-
00:03:30So we're one trading day away from a possible buy signal.
-
00:03:34And just like in the US, insurance stocks are holding up very well north of the
-
00:03:38border, whether you're looking at Manulife or SunLife.
-
00:03:42Now, I always talk about Fairfax being
-
00:03:44Canada's version of Berkshire Hathaway and it is still holding up very well, not
-
00:03:49looking as good as Berkshire Hathaway itself, which made a new high yesterday.
-
00:03:54And Berkshire Hathaway is listed as an
-
00:03:57insurance stock, so that matches up pretty well with the insurance index.
-
00:04:02Looking at the major index ETF, starting
-
00:04:06with the iShares for the TSX60, we hit the upper channel line yesterday.
-
00:04:10So looking for a close on Wednesday above $30.65. Then looking at the NASDAQ 100,
-
00:04:18trading in the channel yesterday, no change in trend there.
-
00:04:21Unlike semiconductors, which made a new closing low for this move.
-
00:04:25Then looking at the DOW still on a sell signal, no change there.
-
00:04:29We've traded through the upper channel
-
00:04:30line two days in a row, but have not closed above it.
-
00:04:33Then looking at the S&P 500, we traded down yesterday still in the channel.
-
00:04:38We're looking for a close on Wednesday
-
00:04:40below 4:44.86. Now you can break up the S&P 500 several ways.
-
00:04:46One way is to look at the equal weighted
-
00:04:49version, so not giving your stocks like Apple overweighting.
-
00:04:53Each stock is equally weighted within the index.
-
00:04:56It is on a sell signal right now.
-
00:04:58So is the low volatility.
-
00:05:00So this is 100 stocks out of the S&P 500 with the lowest volatility.
-
00:05:05They recently made a new low before moving back up into the channel.
-
00:05:10And then the high beta stocks are also on a sell signal.
-
00:05:13That has a lot to do with one stock, and that was Apple, which plunged last week.
-
00:05:17You can see when the ETF rolled over and
-
00:05:21you can see Apple are rolling over there as well.
-
00:05:24So Apple was down yesterday.
-
00:05:26Looking at the rest of the high beta
-
00:05:28stocks that we follow, we've got Alphabet still on a buy signal, no change there.
-
00:05:33Amazon having an inside day.
-
00:05:35Then we saw Meta pull back closing in the channel.
-
00:05:39We also saw Microsoft close within the channel.
-
00:05:42No change in trend for NVIDIA had an inside day on Tuesday.
-
00:05:46And no change in trend for Tesla, which made a new high for this move.
-
00:05:49And that shows up as a bearish reversal day.
-
00:05:52But remember, we did not close below the previous day's low, so not overly
-
00:05:56concerned about that bearish reversal signal just yet.
-
00:06:00And you can see that we're getting pretty close to getting to that open gap up here,
-
00:06:05which could certainly be a target, whether it's the bottom or the top.
-
00:06:09But we may see Tesla trade up to those levels on Wednesday.
-
00:06:14Last up, let's take a look at what's going on with the hard stuff.
-
00:06:18Things that if it drops on your foot is going to hurt.
-
00:06:21Copper traded up into the channel for the
-
00:06:23second day in a row, so no change in trend there.
-
00:06:26A small pullback.
-
00:06:27Gold was down yesterday.
-
00:06:29Silver was up slightly on Tuesday.
-
00:06:32It is still stuck to the 20, 23, 43 level, so that's still holding us in check.
-
00:06:39Then looking at the gold miners in the
-
00:06:41channel once again, no change in trend for the GDX or the XGD or Silver Miners.
-
00:06:48No changes in trend from Tuesday's training action.
-
00:06:51Okay, folks, that is all for this morning's presentation.
-
00:06:55Normally, I tell you to think about donating blood.
-
00:06:58If you're in the US right now, there is a crisis going on.
-
00:07:01There's been a whole bunch of climate disasters over the past month or so.
-
00:07:06And if you have the time, please consider donating blood.
-
00:07:10I've heard people complain about the waiting time to donate blood.
-
00:07:15I don't ever experience that.
-
00:07:17We make appointments and I've never had any trouble.
-
00:07:21I've donated over 50 times and I've never
-
00:07:23once had to wait for more than five minutes from my appointment time.
-
00:07:27So I don't understand how the system works in the US.
-
00:07:31I've never had any personal experience with it.
-
00:07:34But if you are south of the border, please
-
00:07:36considering donating blood not only for somebody else's wellbeing, but it's
-
00:07:42important for your own personal wellbeing as well.
-
00:07:45Have a great day, folks.
-
00:07:46Next time you'll hear my voice is on Thursday morning.
