-
00:00:00Good morning, everyone, and welcome to Wednesday morning.
-
00:00:03It's Stephen Whiteside here from TheUpTrend.
-
00:00:05com In the pre-market this morning, things are fairly quiet.
-
00:00:09We only have one economic number coming
-
00:00:11out of any significance this morning, and that is international trade at 8:30.
-
00:00:16Then we have energy inventories coming out later in the morning.
-
00:00:20Now, there's lots of stocks in the news this morning.
-
00:00:22One that I know a lot of you follow is Ford, and Ford was up over 4% yesterday.
-
00:00:28It's up over 5% in the pre-market this
-
00:00:31morning, and it is currently trading above the December high.
-
00:00:35So a new high for this move for Ford on Wednesday morning.
-
00:00:40Now, the VIX moved lower yesterday.
-
00:00:42It's back on a sell signal, and we really don't care too much about what the VIX
-
00:00:46does right now unless it starts breaking out above 15.
-
00:00:50That would certainly tell us something new is happening in the options market.
-
00:00:54Now, yesterday was an inside day for the S&P 500 and for the Dow.
-
00:01:00We are looking at a target of 500 on the
-
00:01:02SPY as our next major area of resistance, and 5,000 on the index itself.
-
00:01:09Coming into Wednesday's trading action, we would need to see a close below $485.
-
00:01:1581 to give us a sell signal for the SPY.
-
00:01:19More conservative traders are going to be looking for a close below 482.
-
00:01:24Then, of course, long-term investors would
-
00:01:26not be disturbed until the S&P 500 closes below $464.
-
00:01:3117 on Friday.
-
00:01:33And so far this week, we're certainly not expecting that to happen.
-
00:01:38Now, the Dow Diamonds had an inside day yesterday.
-
00:01:40The Q's were able to trade slightly above the previous day's high.
-
00:01:44So no change in trend there.
-
00:01:46No change in trend for the Russell 2000 or
-
00:01:48for the Russell microcaps, both moving up into the channel yesterday.
-
00:01:53Then looking at semiconductors.
-
00:01:55The SOX index looks like this, and the
-
00:01:58semiconductor ETF that I usually quote looks like this.
-
00:02:01The reason I follow this one is it's part of the S&P family, the SPDR family.
-
00:02:08Unfortunately, a lot of you want me to
-
00:02:11cover this one, which certainly has a lot more volume.
-
00:02:15And so in the future, I will be quoting the SMH as you have requested.
-
00:02:21And you can see it is up yesterday.
-
00:02:23It was up at the $195 level as up at the high of the day.
-
00:02:28And we are looking We're waiting to see if
-
00:02:30it can break out and make a higher high on Wednesday.
-
00:02:33Now, what happened on Tuesday?
-
00:02:36Well, materials were the big winner, while technology stocks
-
00:02:40were the losers on the day, and materials are still on a sell signal.
-
00:02:45That would change on Wednesday with a close above $83.
-
00:02:4803.
-
00:02:50No joy for real estate.
-
00:02:52We've got health care making a new high.
-
00:02:54Lots of big cap health care stocks have
-
00:02:57had huge run-ups over the in the past couple of weeks.
-
00:03:01Industrials made a new closing high yesterday.
-
00:03:04No change in trend for consumer discretionary.
-
00:03:07Energy stocks in the US still on a buy signal.
-
00:03:10No change in trend for utilities.
-
00:03:13And then looking at financials, Very quiet day for financials on Tuesday.
-
00:03:18Bank stocks still on a sell signal, and
-
00:03:20the regional bank still on a sell signal, holding the recent low.
-
00:03:25And of course, the market is a little
-
00:03:26concerned about what's happening in the regional banking sector, which could
-
00:03:30roll over to the rest of the market if something major breaks down.
-
00:03:35Consumer staples still on a buy signal, no change there.
-
00:03:38Communication services, we saw a pullback
-
00:03:41yesterday, closing below the previous day's low, and that could be a concern
-
00:03:46going forward, but right now we are still on a buy signal.
-
00:03:49No change in trend for technology stocks.
-
00:03:51Then we saw transports move up.
-
00:03:54The transports were not part of the list
-
00:03:56we started with, but I just wanted to throw them in there that the We are back
-
00:04:00on a buy signal and actually closed above the previous week's high.
-
00:04:04Next up, let's take a look at the world of commodities.
-
00:04:07Starting with crude oil, the USO is still on a sell signal.
-
00:04:11Now, we do have energy inventories coming out later this morning, which could
-
00:04:15certainly change the direction of this ETF.
-
00:04:18Now, it is looking bullish, even though we're still on a sell signal here.
-
00:04:22Notice we put in a recent higher high, and we've put in a series of higher lows.
-
00:04:27So that is a bullish chart pattern, even though we're still on a sell signal.
-
00:04:32That is also true for gasoline, which
-
00:04:34recently put in a higher high and a higher low.
-
00:04:38So we're still on a sell signal here.
-
00:04:40For gasoline, we would need a close above 64.
-
00:04:4222 on Wednesday to give us a buy signal.
-
00:04:46Unfortunately, no joy for natural gas.
-
00:04:49We made a new closing low for this move yesterday, still clustering around the 18.
-
00:04:5475 level.
-
00:04:54If we want to break down from here, then 15.
-
00:04:5763 would be our next target to the downside.
-
00:05:01Looking at the metals, we've got the GLD trading in the channel.
-
00:05:04It's up a penny in the pre-market last time I checked.
-
00:05:08Looking for a close above 189.
-
00:05:1101 to give us a new buy signal, get us back on track for the GLD.
-
00:05:16No joy for a palladium, no joy for
-
00:05:18platinum, and no joy for silver coming into Wednesday's trading action.
-
00:05:24Last up this morning, let's take a look at the Magnificent 8.
-
00:05:27And starting with AMD, it is back on a sell signal as of Tuesday's close.
-
00:05:32No change in trend for Amazon, no change
-
00:05:35in trend for Alphabet, still on a sell signal here.
-
00:05:38Then no change in trend for Microsoft, looking for a close below $400.
-
00:05:4252 on Wednesday They did give us a sell signal.
-
00:05:46Nvidia made a new high yesterday, trading
-
00:05:49right over the $700 level before starting to pull back.
-
00:05:53No change in trend there.
-
00:05:55And then looking at Shopify, we had a
-
00:05:58reversal last week week, but we're not going anywhere.
-
00:06:01So looking for a close on Wednesday below $79.
-
00:06:0544.
-
00:06:06And then Tesla was up on the day, still trading below the lower channel line,
-
00:06:10looking for a close on Wednesday above $195.
-
00:06:1552.
-
00:06:16And so far, what we're seeing in the
-
00:06:18pre-market, we're not seeing that just yet.
-
00:06:20And again, we are looking for our first close above this bar.
-
00:06:25And yes, we have traded above it, but we haven't closed above it.
-
00:06:28And that's the first thing we're really looking for.
-
00:06:30Our last chart of the day is Netflix.
-
00:06:33Netflix is still on a buy signal here.
-
00:06:35We've got an early warning signal yesterday closed in the channel.
-
00:06:38So we're looking for a close on Wednesday below $546.
-
00:06:4380.
-
00:06:45Okay, folks, that is all for this morning's presentation.
-
00:06:48So far, it looks like we're going to have a fairly quiet open on Wednesday.
-
00:06:52Have a great day, folks, and the next time
-
00:06:54you'll hear my voice is on Thursday morning.
